Junior keeper is now fourth all-time in career saves at Marshall
IRVING, Texas – Marshall women's soccer junior Megan Bonelli was named Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Bonelli recorded 13 saves over the past two matches and is now fourth all-time in program history in career saves with 172.
"Megan had a great week for us," Herd head coach Kevin Long said. "Clearly keeping us in the ODU game to allow us to get the win, and again, at Charlotte, allowing the score to stay close so we remained in the game. Her physical presence and fearlessness, along with her ability to use her feet have been huge factors for us this season.
"Like any time we receive individual awards, it is a great statement about the team in front of her and while we are excited for her to get recognized, our entire program takes great pride in playing in a way for one of our own to receive these awards."
Bonelli returned to the lineup against Old Dominion after exiting the second half of the match at UTEP, and then missing the home match with FIU due to injury. The junior keeper recorded three saves in the win over the Monarchs including two late in the contest. ODU had a great chance to even the score in the 87th and 88th minutes, but Bonelli was there for the saves. She also stayed in the contest after taking an incidental shot to the face from a Monarch player during a corner kick.
The Apollo, Pa., native recorded 10 saves against C-USA leader Charlotte in a close 3-2 loss on Sunday. The 49ers have averaged almost 17 shots and eight shots on goal per contest and Bonelli kept the Herd in the contest, stonewalling so many chances for the 49ers to run away with the match.
In the second half of the match at Charlotte, Bonelli moved ahead of Ashleigh Woods (2001-04) into fourth place all-time in program history. Kayla Johnson (1998-01), who was a freshman during the program's first season, sits in third place with 189.
Bonelli has 53 saves, a .757 save percentage, three wins and two shutouts.
Marshall returns to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. eastern, at the UTSA Roadrunners.
