HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall athletics will host "Herd Madness" – a celebration of the start of basketball season – on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m., inside the Henderson Center. The event has a new date, time and venue to accommodate fans coming to town for homecoming, and the interest and excitement surrounding the men's and women's basketball programs.

The annual evening of hoops is FREE and open to the public. Doors for "Herd Madness" open at 6 p.m., and those in attendance will see a showcase of the programs with team introductions, a 3-point competition, two-ball competition and dunk contest. The night will conclude with an autograph session.

The first 1,000 fans will receive a "Herd Madness" T-shirt. There will be a food giveaway for students, courtesy of D.P. Dough, and one student will be selected to attempt a shot to win a car, thanks to Todd Judy Ford of Huntington. Schedule posters will also be given away.

Season ticket-holders can also take advantage of "Herd Madness" by picking up 2018-19 tickets. Those with interest in purchasing season tickets can participate in a choose-your-seat program. If season ticket-holders cannot attend the event and pick up tickets, they will be mailed Monday, Oct. 22.

The Marshall men's basketball team is coming off a Conference USA championship and the program's first NCAA tournament appearance in 31 years. The Thundering Herd, a No. 13 seed in the NCAA tournament, defeated fourth-seeded Wichita State to advance in the big bracket for the first time in school history. Several key players return, including C-USA tournament MVP Jon Elmore and second team all-conference player C.J. Burks. Fans will also get a glimpse of the team's newcomers, including dunking sensation Taevion Kinsey, who has had one of his electrifying slams appear on SportsCenter's Top 10 plays on ESPN.

The Herd women's basketball team is coached by Tony Kemper, who is in his second season building the program. Marshall returns four seniors, including leading scorer and C-USA second team all-conference member Shayna Gore, who is in the top 10 in program history in scoring and the all-time leader in 3-pointers made.

The Marshall men play home exhibition games on Sunday, Oct. 28 (Glenville State) and Thursday, Nov. 1 (West Virginia Wesleyan) before hitting the road for the season opener on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at Eastern Kentucky.

The Herd women open their season at home on Wednesday, Nov. 7, against Indiana State.
