Pita records season-high 14 saves

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Marshall men's soccer team forced No. 5 Kentucky into the second overtime before falling 1-0 in the 105th minute, Saturday night. Redshirt junior keeper Paulo Pita recorded a season-best 14 saves in the match.

The Thundering Herd is now 4-6-2 overall and 1-2-1 in Conference USA play. The Wildcats are now 10-1-1 and 4-1-0 in conference action.

"The lads fought very hard tonight and a deflection is such a tough way to lose a match," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "Paulo was terrific in net and made five or six world class saves, but he couldn't do anything about the goal.

"We played well in spells, but we need to be more clinical with our possession. We need to threaten the other team more, which will create more room to possess, which will create more chances, which will create more room and so on. It's a vicious cycle we need to initiate more often. On the positive side, if we have that spirit and can defend that well, it will make us very competitive."

Kentucky outshot Marshall 7-4 in the first half, with five on goal and Pita was there to make every stop. In the second half, the Wildcats turned up the pressure with 17 shots and eight on goal. Again, Pita made every save including a few diving stops with just enough touch on the ball to deflect it away from the goal. The first 90 minutes was not enough, as the teams battled through and could not find the back of the net.

Neither team managed much of an attack in the first overtime period. Kentucky recorded just one shot on goal and Pita made his 14th save of the night. After 100 minutes, the match was still scoreless and so it moved on to the final 10-minute period.

The Wildcats finally finished off the match with a goal just over four minutes into the second overtime.

The Herd returns to the pitch on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., against Northern Kentucky at Hoops Family Field. Marshall's next conference match is Saturday, Oct. 20, against Charlotte with kickoff at 11 a.m. during Alumni Weekend.
