Men’s Soccer Takes Down NKU in Double Overtime

Bouzoukis scores both goals for the Herd

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team defeated the Northern Kentucky Norse, 2-1, in double overtime, Tuesday night at Hoops Family Field. Freshman Gianni Bouzoukis scored both goals for the Herd.
The Thundering Herd improves to 5-6-2 while the Norse fall to 9-5.
"It feels very good," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "I think we stuck with it tonight. We scored a goal and as usual, they seem to concede pretty quickly after we scored. It was a mental let down, but we stuck with it. We knew we'd have two overtime periods to continue to score. We just kept telling the guys to keep doing the same thing, keep moving the ball we're creating chances. We're getting in behind and we're dictating where the game is going to be played. To see us finally win one and win one in overtime is very relieving."
Marshall dominated possession in the first half and managed six shots with just one on goal from sophomore Jamil Roberts. Senior goalkeeper Ben Martinez did not face a shot on goal as the Norse took just three total shots.
The Herd got on the board first in the 56th minute as Bouzoukis hit a one-touch shot off a pass from fellow freshman Kelan Swales. Just five minutes later, NKU hit the equalizer on a header off a free kick. The two teams battled back and forth for the final 30 minutes of regulation as both squads had opportunities to win the match, but just could not find the back of the net. NKU was issued a red card in the 91st minute, and played a man down for the rest of the match.
Martinez recorded five saves for the Herd, all coming in the second half.
The match moved on in to the first overtime as both teams managed just one shot each, with none on goal.
Bouzoukis punched in the game-winner less than a minute into the second overtime period. Freshman JP Rylah found Bouzoukis open with another quick touch to beat the keeper and grab the win for Marshall.
Bouzoukis now leads the team with four goals this season, and it was his first match of the year with two goals.
"NKU's coach Stu (Riddle) is from New Zealand and he actually played with Gianni's dad," coach Grassie added. "So I think this was a big game for Gianni and I think he was a little disappointed not to be included in the first half. I told him at halftime, this is your moment, you're fresh, here you go, can you see where the holes are.
"Good strikers when they come off the bench can read the opposition and be looking for those holes. He scored two goals tonight and it's very rewarding. He's going to be on the phone tonight with his dad, reliving this one. Rightly so, he played tremendous when he went on. Two goals, it makes it hard to drop a striker when you score two goals."
Marshall stays at home this week as the Charlotte 49ers come to Hoops Family Field on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 11 a.m., for Alumni Weekend.
