HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team lost a tight battle to the Charlotte 49ers, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Hoops Family Field.
The Thundering Herd is now 5-7-2 overall and 1-3-1 in Conference USA. The 49ers improve to 8-3-1 and 4-2-0 in conference play.
"That was a frustrating one," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "We lost focus right at the end and got punished for it. To be fair though, I'm really proud of the guys. They showed good fight and played well and for the majority of the match we looked like the better side. We talked before the match about character, and how everything you do either grows or lessens your character. Today, the majority of our players can hold their heads up high, having put in a really good effort."
The first half was a back-and-forth battle with both teams trying to find some offensive rhythm. Marshall led in shots 4-2, but neither team managed a shot on goal. Both teams had one corner kick each.
The second half began in the same fashion as the first half. However, after about ten minutes, the teams started to find some chances. Charlotte had the first shot on goal, but senior keeper Ben Martinez was there to quickly deflect the close range shot up over the goal. Marshall again led in total shots 8-5, but the 49ers managed three shots on goal to just one for the Herd.
Charlotte scored to take the lead with one minute and four seconds to go as Joe Brito knocked in a deflected free kick.
Marshall is back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m., against Wright State at Hoops Family Field. The Herd then hits the road to take on New Mexico (Oct. 27) and South Carolina (Oct. 30), before returning home for the regular season finale against Florida Atlantic (Nov. 3).
