HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team lost a 3-1 decision to No. 17 Wright State, Tuesday night at Hoops Family Field.
The Thundering Herd is now 5-8-2 and the Raiders improve to 12-1-2
"That game was definitely there for the taking," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "We played well at times, we could move the ball pretty freely. We had to be aware of the counter attack. We put ourselves in a hole and we gave them a couple of chances in the first half and they score one. Ben (Martinez) made a good save on the other one. We had plenty of chances.
"We talk about the zones we should be shooting in, the zones that we need to get to before we take chances. We talk about not taking 35-yard chances, we talk about not talking to the referees. We talk about after we score being composed and after we scored, we were so out of position. Our heads just completely went and that is the type of thing we need to fix."
Marshall tallied eight shots in the first half with two on goal that were stopped by the Wright State keeper. The Raiders got on the board first with a goal in the 28th minute and went in at the half leading 1-0.
The Herd hit the equalizer in the 71st minute. Freshman Kelan Swales made a pass to sophomore Pedro Dolabella, who then quickly sent a pass to freshman Vinicius Fernandes who was in the middle of the six-yard box. Fernandes hit a quick one-touch shot into the net for his second goal of the season.
Wright State regained the lead nearly three minutes later and then extended the lead to two goals in the 86th minute.
Marshall finished the match with 14 total shots and six on goal. The Raiders totaled 13 shots with four on goal.
The Herd has three matches remaining in the regular season, all in Conference USA play. Marshall hits the road for the next two, traveling to New Mexico (Oct. 27) and South Carolina (Oct. 30). The Herd's regular season finale and senior night is Nov. 3 against Florida Atlantic.
