ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Marshall men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw Saturday night against the New Mexico Lobos, from the UNM Soccer Complex.
The Thundering Herd is now 5-8-3 overall and 1-3-2 in Conference USA action. The Lobos are now 4-10-1 overall and 2-4-1 in conference play.
"Very proud of the lads tonight," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "Before the match, we talked about hitting the reset button on the season and focusing on these last three matches as a mini season in itself. But we started slow and shot ourselves in the foot for their first two goals, so I don't think we hit the reset until the second half.
"I'm so proud of them for their fight and togetherness in the second half. We kept good composure and played some nice soccer under difficult circumstances. That draw felt like a win."
New Mexico, on its senior night, got on the board first with a goal in the 27th minute. The Lobos scored again in the 31st minute and took a 2-0 lead into the half.
The Herd made it a one goal contest in the 51st minute when freshman Gianni Bouzoukis took a pass from sophomore Pedro Dolabella and sent it in for the goal. It was the team-leading fifth goal of the season for Bouzoukis.
Junior Jonas Westmeyer tied the match with just one minute remaining, driving in a free kick opportunity from just outside of the 18-yard box. It was Westmeyer's third goal of the season and sent the match into overtime.
Neither team found the net in the overtime periods as the 110 minutes of clock-time came to a close.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Paulo Pita finished with five saves in his first action since his 14-save performance at Kentucky on Oct. 13.
Marshall has one more match on the road on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at South Carolina. The contest was originally scheduled for Sept. 16, but was pushed back due to Hurricane Florence. Kickoff from Columbia, S.C., is scheduled for 5 p.m.
The Herd then returns to Hoops Family Field for senior night and the regular season finale against Florida Atlantic on Saturday, Nov. 3.
