COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Marshall men's soccer team is in South Carolina to pick up its postponed match with the Gamecocks, Tuesday at 5 p.m. The original match was scheduled for Sept. 16, but was moved due to Hurricane Florence.

The Thundering Herd comes in at 5-8-3 overall and 1-3-2 in Conference USA play. South Carolina is 6-9 overall and 1-5 in conference action.

"This match is like a cup final for us," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "If we win, we know we have a place in the tournament. The guys have that mentality, and have trained well. The way the New Mexico match finished, we wanted to carry on playing all night.

"The lads look fresh and hungry, so it's all good signs."

Marshall is coming off a 2-2 draw at New Mexico Saturday night, and is in control of its own destiny to grab a spot in the postseason. The Herd currently sits in seventh place, with the South Carolina match and Florida Atlantic (Nov. 3) remaining. Both the Gamecocks and the Owls are below Marshall in the standings. The top seven teams advance to the C-USA Championships, hosted by Charlotte, Nov. 7-11.

Freshman Gianni Bouzoukis leads the Herd in scoring with five goals and 10 points. Junior Jonas Westmeyer and freshman JP Rylah are next with three goals each, and Westmeyer has three assists. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Paulo Pita made his return in the net Saturday at New Mexico after sitting out three matches due to injury. Pita finished with five saves and has 54 this season with a .750 save percentage.

After a rough start to the season, the Gamecocks have won the last three matches, all were shutouts. With wins over USC Upstate (2-0), Georgia State (1-0) and UAB (1-0), South Carolina is trying to work its way back into the postseason picture. The victory over the Blazers was the first conference win of the season for the Gamecocks. After playing Marshall, South Carolina finishes the season at FIU (currently third in conference) on Friday.

The Gamecocks have scored 16 goals this season, with four coming in the past three matches and five in a win over Wofford. Luca Mayr leads the team with four goals this season and scored twice during the current three-match winning streak. Justin Sukow and Petter Soelberg are tied for second with three. Ian McGrane and Justin Bauer have split time in the net this season, however McGrane played the majority of the last three matches. He has 31 saves this season while Bauer has 17.

This will be the 15th meeting all-time between Marshall and South Carolina. The Herd leads the series 8-5-1 and won the previous meeting, 2-1, in Huntington last season.

The regular season finale for the Herd is Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m., at Hoops Family Field against Florida Atlantic. It will be senior night as Ben Martinez, John Pappas and Chris Taibi will be honored on the field prior to the match.
