HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team returns to Hoops Family Field Tuesday night for a non-conference match against the Northern Kentucky Norse. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Thundering Herd come in with a record of 4-6-2. NKU is 9-4 overall.
The match will be broadcast live on HerdVision on CUSAtv as Jake Griffith will have the call. The match will also be broadcast on 88.1 WMUL-FM and with audio streamed online at www.marshall.edu/wmul through one of the Listen Live links.
"We're very glad to have a match so soon after UK," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "Losing on a deflection in overtime was tough, so having another match to focus on so quickly is great. We know that if we play well, we can win this match, which will hopefully sharpen our focus for NKU."
Marshall is coming off a tough, double-overtime loss at No. 5 Kentucky Saturday night. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Paulo Pita played an incredible match making 14 saves including several diving stops to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard. Marshall's offense managed five shots with one on goal. Kentucky finally got the game-winning goal in the 104th minute.
Marshall has had 10 different players score a goal this season with six scoring two or more. Freshman JP Rylah leads the team with three. In the net, Pita has 49 saves, allowed 16 goals, has a 1.28 goals against average and sports a .754 save percentage.
The Norse come in as winners of three of the last four matches, with the most recent as a 6-2 victory over Horizon League foe Detroit Mercy. At times it seems that the Norse offense has been scoring at will with 33 goals this season to 20 allowed. Freshman Alex Willis leads the way with 14 goals, seven assists and 35 points. Willis has scored two goals in a game, four times this season. He is tied for second in the country in total goals and is fourth in goals per game.
Calvin Murphy comes in next with six goals and Alex Grieve has five goals and leads the team with 11 assists. Three players have spent time in goal for the Norse. Jim Barkei has logged the most time with 774 minutes in nine starts. Barkei has recorded 31 saves, allowed 14 goals and has a .689 save percentage. Ed Harvey has appeared in five matches with four starts and has 17 saves and allowed six goals. Isaiah Schatz has appeared in one match.
Following the match against NKU, Marshall stays at home for the next two contests. The Herd returns to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 11 a.m., against the Charlotte 49ers for Alumni Weekend. Marshall then plays against Wright State at Hoops Family Field on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.
