Sophomore earned first collegiate win at Maryb S. Kauth Invitational
IRVING, Texas – Sophomore Kerri Parks was named the Conference USA Women's Golfer of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
"Kerri continues to be someone we can count on to post low scores for us," Herd head coach Brooke Burkhammer said. "She's a great asset to this team and one of the reasons we had such a good week in Texas."
Parks had an excellent tournament at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational in San Antonio. She began the event with a career-best 5-under 67 and sat atop the leaderboard after the first round. The Flushing, Mich., native recorded seven birdies.
The second round was canceled due to poor weather conditions, and it wasn't much better for the third round. With temperatures in the 40s and 10-15 mph winds, Parks scored a 4-over 76, but had enough of a lead, and also played better than the other players near the top, to stay in position to win. She finished with a 1-under 143.
It was Parks first collegiate win and it came against some great competition. Four out of the other eight schools are ranked in the GolfStat top 100 with Tennessee (43) and TCU (48) in the top 50. The sophomore's previous top finish of the 2018-19 season was tied for fifth at the Roseann Schwartz Invitational. During her freshman season, Parks finished second overall at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate (March 18-20).
Her score helped Marshall to finish in second place, the third top-two finish of the fall for the Herd. With the play of Parks and her teammates, Marshall has worked its way into the top 100 with a ranking of No. 81.
The Marshall women's golf team is back in action Oct. 21-23 at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in Kiawah Island, S.C.
