Junior Cross Country Runner Honored

Conference Release
IRVING, Texas—Junior Abigail Short has been named to the 2018 Cross Country InTouch Credit Union Conference USA All-Academic Team, the league office announced Thursday.

Short, a native of Hurricane, West Virginia, carries a 4.0 GPA in the Marshall University Accelerated BS/MD seven-year medical program, while she majors in biology in undergraduate studies.

"I'm honored and excited to be recognized for the All-Academic Team," Short said. "It takes a lot of hard work and time management to balance academics and cross country."

Short's honor is the sixth time a Marshall cross country student-athlete has earned a spot on the C-USA All-Academic Team. She is the first recipient since both William Shaffer and Tony Hayes made the team in 2016. Hayes earned a spot in 2015 also, preceded by Henry Heisey (2009) and Kathleen Clark (2008).

Short, who has competed in every cross country meet since her freshman year, is a two-time C-USA Academic Medal recipient.

"Abbie is the definition of a student-athlete," assistant coach Caleb Bowen said. "She works endless hours perfecting her craft as a cross country runner while balancing the grueling workload of her BS/MD program. It's been awesome to have her part of our program and it's going to be fun to watch her become an outstanding doctor here in a few years."
