Both Marshall Soccer Programs Honored for Academic Excellence

Teams received United Soccer Coaches’ Team Academic Award

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Marshall men's and women's soccer teams were honored by the United Soccer Coaches for team academic excellence, the organization announced Thursday.
Teams are honored with the Team Academic Award for having a composite grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better. The award recognizes the classroom performance for the 2017-18 academic year.
"It is a great testament to the commitment of Marshall's Soccer players, both Men and Women," women's soccer head coach Kevin Long said. "Our players strive for excellence in all they do, and this award for both teams is an opportunity for our soccer players to be recognized for the high standard they have set for themselves in the classroom."
Twelve teams from Conference USA were honored on Thursday with seven women's teams and five men's programs. Marshall was the only school that had both teams bring home the award.
"We're thrilled that we can win this award and achieve success in the classroom," men's soccer head coach Chris Grassie said. "Academics are their own reward, so I'm happy that our guys were able to attain such high standards. We tell our team that in everything they do, they should have a growth mindset and strive to be the best. If there's an award to win, win it.
"Education is the gift they are giving themselves, they are 'building their own house'. It's nice to see that they are striving to build the brightest futures they can for themselves. Next year we will set the target even higher. Good time managment and dedication work on the pitch the same way they do in the classroom, and it's no coincidence that successful student-athletes have these traits in spades."
The women's soccer program finished with an overall team GPA of 3.38, good for third-best in the conference. The men's team garnered a team GPA of 3.05.
Both programs were recognized in 2016 as well.
