Herd sophomore adds to her honors

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Marshall women's golf sophomore Kerri Parks was named the Golf Association of Michigan Women's Player of the Year, the organization announced Thursday.

GAM Players of the Year are determined by the GAM Honor Roll points system. Point totals can be found under the Championships tab at gam.org. Over the next few weeks the GAM will announce more Players of the Year in gender and age categories. Earlier this week it was announced that Alex Scott of Traverse City is the Men's Player of the Year.

"I'm just really happy to see that my hard work is paying off and those long hours spent on the course this season are worth it for this accomplishment," Parks said. "I'm also really excited for the spring season and I'd love to continue doing well with my team and work toward our goal of being conference champs."

Parks finished her 2018 summer winning the Michigan Women's Amateur Championship at the Western Golf & Country Club in Redford, Mich. The Flushing, Mich., native then continued her excellent play into the fall Marshall season.

The sophomore helped the Herd to three top-2 finishes in the fall including winning the William & Mary Invitational. Parks finished tied for first at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational in San Antonio, Oct. 14-17, and was named Conference USA Women's Golfer of the Week.

"Kerri plays such a huge role in our program right now and has been a big reason for our success this fall season," Herd head coach Brooke Burkhammer said. "I am not surprised she is player of the year at all because she's a competitor and has a bright future ahead of her."

Parks has helped lead the team to a top 100 ranking on GolfStat.com. She is second on the team with a 73.92 stroke average through 13 rounds. Parks scored a 5-under 67, her collegiate-best, in the first round of the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational.

The Herd gets back out on the course, Feb. 18-19, at the Amelia Island Collegiate.
