HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team earned a tough home overtime win over the Evansville Purple Aces, 72-65, Thursday night in the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd improves to 2-4 and the Purple Aces fall to 1-4.
"It's really good to get a win," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "Really proud. Definitely didn't do everything exactly how we wanted to do it. We looked up there and we were down five with around three minutes to go and found a way to win the game.
"I'm proud of their effort. We rebounded the ball pretty well. We were active on the glass and that is how we got it done at the end of the day. There were a couple of possessions there that we made sure we got a basket before we left our end of the floor. Today was a good step and now we have to go show that on Saturday."
Marshall grabbed 63 rebounds – including 26 offense boards – as redshirt junior Khadaijia Brooks (13), sophomore Taylor Pearson (12) and junior Ashley Saintigene (11) all finished in double-figures. Brooks and Pearson both established career highs on the glass as well as double-doubles with 19 and 10 points, respectively. It was Pearson's first career double-double.
The last time Marshall had two players with a double-double in the same game was Nov. 10, 2017, against Longwood (Logan Fraley and Saintigene). The last time that the Herd had three players with 10 or more rebounds in a contest was Dec. 7, 2016 at North Carolina (Talequia Hamilton, Brooks and Saintigene).
Saintigene also recorded three blocks and six points in 19 minutes. The junior extended her shot-blocking streak to seven-straight games going back to last season.
Senior Shayna Gore put up 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Gore continued her streak of consecutive games with a steal to 17. Sophomore Kristen Mayo finished with 10 points, three assists, no turnovers and hit 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Mayo has been perfect from the line to start the season as she is now 17-of-17.
The Herd started off struggling offensively in the first quarter, shooting 25 percent from the floor, and trailed 17-14 at the end of the period. Marshall increased its defensive pressure in the second quarter and went in at the half trailing by one, 29-28.
Marshall started the third quarter on a 10-0 run and took an eight-point lead before the Purple Aces broke the run with a three at the 7:09 mark. Brooks and Gore combined to score 12 points in the third as the Herd shot 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from the field and led by seven, 50-43.
The Purple Aces rallied back with a 10-0 run to start the fourth and took a three-point lead. The teams traded baskets with Evansville holding a slim lead into the final minute. Gore hit two free throws with 1:04 remaining to bring the Herd within one, 61-60. Thirty-two seconds later, Brooks converted one free throw to tie the game at 61-61. Saintigene recorded her second block of the game in the final seconds to help keep the game tied and move on to overtime.
Marshall dominated the extra period from the start hitting 2-of-5 from the floor, but also converting 7-of-7 from the line. Mayo hit all six of her free throws in overtime. Evansville struggled to find an opening on the offensive side and hit just 1-of-7 from the field.
The Herd dominated in the paint, 36-6, and converted 17 points off 13 Evansville turnovers.
Marshall stays home for a quick turnaround, as the Coppin State Eagles visit the Cam Henderson Center on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 1 p.m.
