Sycamores Use Big Third Quarter to Down Marshall

Brooks records fourth double-double
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Visiting Indiana State scored 27 third-quarter points and got a double-double effort of 13 points and 13 rebounds from Regan Wentland to defeat host Marshall 62-53 Wednesday evening in the Cam Henderson Center.
The game was the season opener for both schools.
The Sycamores also received 13 points off the bench from Alexis Delgado and 11 more via Ashli O'Neal. Tierra Webb recorded a team-high four assists.
Marshall was led by Khadaijia Brooks' fourth-career double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds), while Shayna Gore added 12 points and Kristen Mayo contributed 10. Taylor Pearson also notched a game-high five assists and no turnovers.
Both teams made 22 turnovers, but the home team held a commanding advantage in points off those miscues (27-10). However, Indiana State also had a 17-point advantage on bench points (23-6).
The Thundering Herd started strong, leading by as many as seven (21-14) on a Brooks three-point play just 25 seconds into the second quarter, and took a 30-25 advantage into the half.
The Sycamores came out firing in the second half, though, and used a 12-0 run to take a 37-30 lead midway through the third stanza.
The lead grew to as many as 13 (49-36) on free throws by Kierra Isaiah, but Marshall fought back with a 13-3 run of its own to close to within three (52-49) on a Taylor Porter triple with 7:45 to go in the game.
ISU put the game away after that with a 7-0 run, punctuated by a Delgado 3-pointer in the corner with just 3:21 left.
The visitors also led in points in the paint (26-14) and second chance points (14-7).
"I'm very disappointed," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "I really like the crew (his team) that's in that locker room. I like coaching them every day. We all have to be better. It's disappointing to start the year like that. We had a five-point lead at the half and promptly gave up (12) straight points with our best five in there. Obviously, I've got to change what I talk about at halftime. I've got a mental note to do that … just a disappointing day."
Marshall will be back in action Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it visits Bowling Green.
