HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team lost to the Towson Tigers, 76-69, Saturday afternoon in the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd falls to 5-7 and the Tigers improve to 6-5.
"A lot of credit to Towson," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "They have been on the road and they really played hard especially in the second half. We had built a nice lead and then gave it all back in a hurry.
"I'm disappointed that they out-fought us on our home floor."
Redshirt senior Taylor Porter led the Herd in scoring with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting, grabbed six rebounds and had two steals. Senior Shayna Gore scored 13 points but struggled to find her shot hitting 4-of-16 from the floor and just 1-of-5 from three. Gore did finish the game with four assists and four steals.
Junior Ashley Saintigene tied her career-high with six blocked shots and added nine points. Junior Princess Clemons had a career-best seven points, grabbed six boards and added one block. Freshman Lorelei Roper recorded two blocks. Both teams finished the game with 10 blocked shots.
Marshall started off slowly and played well down the stretch at the end of the first quarter. The Herd trailed by five with one minute to go, and went on a 7-0 run to end the quarter with a two-point lead, 19-17, capped by a three-pointer from sophomore Kristen Mayo right at the buzzer.
The Thundering Herd doubled up the Tigers, 20-10, in the second quarter to run the lead out to 12 points at the end of the first half, 39-27.
Towson came out firing in the third quarter hitting 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from the floor as the Marshall offense went cold shooting just 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from the floor. The game was tied at 53-53 going into the fourth.
The Herd struggled again offensively in the fourth quarter. Towson ended the game on a 16-4 run over the final three minutes to grab the win.
Marshall returns to the court on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 1 p.m., in the Cam Henderson Center as the Delaware State Hornets come to town. It is the final non-conference game of the 2018-19 season for the Herd. Marshall begins Conference USA play on Jan. 3 at home against Old Dominion.
