MADISON, Wisc. – The Marshall women's basketball team fought hard but in the end lost 67-49 to the Wisconsin Badgers, Tuesday night in the Kohl Center.

The Thundering Herd is now 3-5 while the Badgers improve to 7-2.

"Wisconsin is a good defensive team," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "They're big. They're fourth in the Big 10 in scoring defense at 54 a game (points given up). They do cause problems at the rim for us. Really their guards gave us some problems because we drive it well with our guards and sometimes we were giving up four inches or more to them and that got into our heads a little bit.

"I thought our initial defense was good and then we couldn't get a rebound. We give up 31 offensive rebounds, you can't do that. That first shot was guarded pretty well by us, but you have to figure out a way to rebound. Doesn't matter how big they are; you have to get a rebound."

Wisconsin finished with 68 rebounds while the Herd grabbed 42.

Redshirt senior Taylor Porter and senior Shayna Gore led the way for Marshall with 16 points each. Porter also finished the game tying her career-high in rebounds with eight. Gore added to her career steals total with two more to get to 153, one behind Marshall Athletics Hall of Famer Sikeetha Shepard-Hall (2002-06) for 14th all-time.

Marshall recorded seven blocks in the contest with junior Ashley Saintigene leading the way with three. Saintigene is now ninth all-time with 73 career blocks, moving ahead of Tammie Simms (1986-87). Redshirt junior Khadaijia Brooks recorded two blocks while junior Princess Clemons and freshman Lorelei Roper had one each.

The Herd began the game with a 7-0 run before the Badgers battled back. The first quarter ended in a 13-13 tie. Wisconsin outscored Marshall by 11 in the second and went in at the halftime break leading, 34-23.

Marshall fought hard throughout the second half. A Clemons free throw cut the deficit to five with 3:43 left in the third. However, a 5-0 run by the Badgers put the lead back to ten at the end of the third.

In the fourth, a couple of three-pointers from Gore brought the deficit back under 10 but Wisconsin kept coming back with key baskets to extend the lead back to double-digits.

Marshall returns to the Cam Henderson Center for back-to-back games. First, the Herd takes on Cleveland State on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 5 p.m., as part of a Marshall basketball doubleheader. Then Marshall welcomes Tennessee State to Huntington on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m.
