HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team made a triumphant return to the Cam Henderson Center with an 86-64 victory over the Cleveland State Vikings, Saturday night.
The Thundering Herd improves to 4-5 while the Vikings fall to 3-7.
"We are getting better," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "That was about as unselfish for 40 minutes of basketball as I have seen in my seven years. I don't think we forced a shot of any kind and we moved the ball really well, no matter who it touched.
"If we continue to play like that, the offense which is the part that we have kind of been struggling with, it will come because there are people who can score the ball on this team."
Redshirt senior guard Taylor Porter led the way with a season-high 22 points and hit 6-of-9 from three. Porter added five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Senior Shayna Gore scored 20, her 33rd career game with 20 or more points, and added six assists and four boards. Sophomore Kristen Mayo dished out a career-high eight assists with zero turnovers.
The starting guard trio of Porter, Gore and Mayo combined for 19 assists and one turnover.
In her first start of the season, junior Ashley Saintigene shot 5-of-6 from the field and scored 11 points with four rebounds and one block. Freshman Lorelei Roper set a career-high with four blocks while scoring eight points and grabbing six boards. Junior Jovana Vucetic set a career-best as well with two blocks.
The Herd came out on fire, hitting 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the field in the first quarter. On the other side, the Vikings managed just 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from the floor and Marshall led 21-14 after the first period. Saintigene dominated inside with eight of her 11 points coming in the first frame.
Marshall extended its lead to 10 on a three by Gore not even one minute into the second quarter. Cleveland State woth a 7-0 run to get within three at the 7:51 mark, before the Herd bounced back and put the lead at double-digits for good with two Gore converted free throws with 2:46 to go in the half. Marshall led by 16, 47-31, at halftime. Gore scored 13 points in the second and Porter added eight.
Porter kept her hot shooting night going into the third, burying three more from long distance. Her six made three-pointers set a career-high and is tied for the third most in a single game in program history.
The Vikings outscored Marshall by one (21-20) in the fourth, but the Herd had already built out a comfortable lead of 20-plus points. Marshall's largest lead was 32 with 3:54 remaining in the contest after redshirt junior Tana Driver hit a three.
The Herd converted 12-of-25 from beyond the arc in the game, the third game this season with 10 or more made three-pointers. With both Porter and Gore scoring 20 or more, it was the first game that Marshall had two players with at least 20 points in a game since Feb. 15, 2018 against UTEP. Talequia Hamilton scored 22 and Gore poured in 20 in the Herd's 66-64 home win.
Marshall's next contest is Saturday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m., as the Tennessee State Tigers come to the Cam Henderson Center.
