HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team defended the home floor with its fifth-straight victory in the Cam Henderson Center, 80-59, over the Tennessee State Lady Tigers Saturday afternoon. Senior Shayna Gore scored 24 points and moved into third place all-time in scoring in program history with 1,625.

The Thundering Herd is now 5-5 while the Lady Tigers fall to 0-10.

"Good win today with a pretty complete basketball game from us," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "I think the key stat when I look at it is we were 22 assists to 13 turnovers. Going back to the last game we are a combined 48 assists to 24 turnovers. We are sharing the ball much better and our scoring has taken off.

"I'm happy with the continued progression. (Tennessee State) is a team that typically gives us problems. Usually when someone pressures us, we turn it over a lot more than 13. Very proud of the way they have taken care of things on and off the court."

Gore needed just nine points to pass Marshall Athletics Hall of Famer Sikeetha Shepard-Hall (2002-06) for third place. The senior scored just six points in the first half before lighting up the scoreboard with 18 more in the second half. The Logan, W.Va., native also recorded five assists and four steals. Gore and redshirt junior Khadaijia Brooks also walked at Marshall's graduation ceremony earlier on Saturday. Brooks led the Herd in rebounds with nine and added three assists, one block and one steal.

Redshirt senior Taylor Porter finished with 16 points, her third-consecutive game with at least 16, and added five boards and four steals. Junior Ashley Saintigene scored 11 points and had one block to continue her consecutive games with a blocked shot streak to 11-straight. Sophomore Kristen Mayo recorded eight assists for the second-straight contest. Mayo has combined for 16 assists to just one turnover over the last two games.

It took a few minutes in the first quarter for the offense to get rolling as Tennessee State led 6-0 until Gore hit a layup at the 6:40 mark. Once Marshall started scoring, the team rolled off a 17-3 run to end the first with a 17-9 lead. The Herd finished the quarter shooting 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from the field.

Marshall's offense struggled in the second quarter, but managed to maintain a lead by hitting eight shots from the line. The Lady Tigers shot 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from the field. Marshall went in at the half with a seven-point lead, 31-24.

The Herd erupted for 27 points in the third quarter, hitting 11-of-17 (64.7 percent) from the field with just two made three-pointers. Gore hit the first three of the quarter for the Herd at the 6:30 mark, which moved her ahead of Shepard-Hall on the all-time scoring list. A layup by Tennessee State with one second on the clock brought the Herd's lead down to 16, 58-42, at the end of the third.

Marshall hit 5-of-8 from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter to help keep the lead in double-digits. Gore and Porter both hit two three-pointers each while freshman Aeriel Adkins hit the final one with 44 seconds remaining. It was Adkins first career points and gave Marshall the 21-point advantage in the final moments.

The Herd finished the game with 16 steals, fourth game of the season with 10 or more and the second-highest single game total of the year as well. Marshall's season-high was 19 steals in the win over Bluefield State. The Herd moved its consecutive games streak with at least two blocks to 12 in a row, finishing the day with three.

Marshall hits the road next as the team travels south to take on the Clemson Tigers on Tuesday, Dec. 18 at 12 p.m. It is the final non-conference road matchup of the year for the Herd. Marshall then returns to the Cam Henderson Center to finish non-conference play with contests against Towson (Dec. 22) and Delaware State (Dec. 29).
