CLEMSON, S.C. – The Marshall women's basketball team heads south to take on the Clemson Tigers for the Herd's final non-conference road game of the 2018-19 season. Tipoff from Littlejohn Coliseum is set for Tuesday at 12 p.m.
The Thundering Herd enters the game with a record of 5-5 while the Tigers come in at 7-4.
The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra as well as on 88.1 WMUL-FM with audio streamed online at www.marshall.edu/wmul through Stream One on the Listen Live links as Scott Hall will have the call.
Last time out - vs. Tennessee State Dec. 15 - W, 80-59
The Herd 's offense started slowly as Tennessee State built out a 6-0 lead through the first three minute and 20 seconds before senior Shayna Gore hit a layup. Marshall proceeded to go on a 17-3 run to finish the first quarter with an 8-point lead. The Herd owned just a 7-point advantage at the end of the half, but Marshall exploded for 27 points in the third quarter to increase the lead to double-digits. Gore led the Herd with 24 points with 18 coming in the second half. The senior passed Sikeetha Shepard-Hall (2002-06) for third all-time at Marshall in scoring with a three-pointer in the third quarter. Redshirt senior Taylor Porter scored 16 points, giving her three-straight games with at least 16. Sophomore Kristen Mayo recorded eight assists for the second consecutive game. Marshall has won five-straight games at home and four of the last five contests. The starting guard trio of Porter, Gore and Mayo all recorded four steals each and 12 of the Herd's 16.
Dishing Out the Ball
Marshall is currently 65th in the nation in assist to turnover ratio with 161 assists and 155 turnovers (1.04) and is one of just 83 programs out of 349 Division I programs with a positive assist to turnover ratio. The Herd over the last two games is a combined 48 assists to 24 turnovers (2-to-1), led by sophomore Kristen Mayo who has combined for 16 assists and just one turnover. The last time Marshall finished a season with a positive assist to turnover ratio was the 1984-85 season. The Herd finished the year 19-10 overall and Co-Southern Conference Regular Season Champions with a 9-1 SoCon record. Marshall lost to Chattanooga in the second round of the SoCon Tournament.
Thieves on the Floor
Marshall has ripped off 101 steals and leads Conference USA with 10.1 thefts per game. 54 percent (101-of-187) of the opposition's turnovers have come from a steal. Shayna Gore leads the team with 18 steals and has recorded at least one in 8-of-10 games. Kia Sivils is next with 17 steals and nabbed five at Appalachian State. It marked back-to-back games that Marshall featured a player with five steals in a game as Taylor Porter had five against Bluefield State. Gore (7th - 1.8) and Sivils (9th - 1.7) both rank in the top 10 in C-USA in steals per game. Add in Porter and Kristen Mayo (tied for 10th - 1.6) and Marshall has more players in the top-15 than any other team in conference.
SWAT Party
Marshall leads Conference USA in blocked shots per game, averaging 5.3 rejections and 53 overall. UTSA is second with 3.6 per game. The Herd blocked at least seven shots in three-straight games (Dec. 1-8) and has recorded at least two blocked shots in each game this season. Marshall's string of at least two blocked shots is 12-straight games going back to last season. The last time Marshall did not record at least two blocks was Feb. 22, 2018 at Rice.
Scouting the Tigers
Clemson comes in after a 90-80 loss to Davidson, following a 5-game winning streak. During the victorious stretch the Tigers defeated Oklahoma (74-62), Illinois (69-67 OT), Belmont (65-62), High Point (83-64) and Rhode Island (80-67). Clemson is averaging just over 71 points per game on 42.7 percent shooting from the field and 25 percent from three. The Tigers are giving up 67.1 points per game on 39.5 percent shooting and 29.8 percent from three-point range. Clemson also sports a plus-6.5 rebounding margin. Kobi Thornton leads the team in scoring with 16.8 points per game, on the glass with 8.3 rebounds per contest and is tied for the lead in blocks with 12. Simone Westbrook is second in points with 15.1 per game and Danielle Edwards adds 13.4 points per game and leads with 38 assists and 36 steals. Aliyah Collier was among the team leaders in boards with 7.8 per game, but has not played since Nov. 19 at Alabama. Tylar Bennett is averaging 7.5 per game and had a three-game stretch (Nov. 28-Dec. 5) where she nabbed a combined 40 boards. Clemson is averaging 21.1 turnovers per contest.
The Series: Second all-time meeting – Clemson leads 1-0
The only time that Marshall and Clemson met on the court came on Dec. 21, 2002 during the Sunsplash Shootout in the Bahamas. The Tigers won in overtime 45-37.
