CLEMSON, S.C. – The Marshall women's basketball team battled throughout and kept it close until the last few minutes, as the Clemson Tigers came away with the 68-54 win Tuesday afternoon in the Littlejohn Coliseum. The game featured nine lead changes and the score was tied seven times.

The Thundering Herd falls to 5-6 while the Tigers improve to 8-4.

"(Clemson) are really athletic and really long and we didn't handle that well," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "25 turnovers, we were not good at handling the pressure. I thought we definitely stretched out how long we played well, on the road, it lasted about 36 minutes. We were pretty darn tough for 36 minutes.

"I just thought we got a little frustrated at the end and that played right into their hands."

Senior Shayna Gore led all scorers with 24 points and played all 40 minutes. Redshirt senior Taylor Porter played 21 minutes, dealing with some early foul trouble, and scored 12 points including two big three-pointers in the third quarter. Redshirt junior Khadaijia Brooks finished just short of a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.

Marshall was outrebounded by just one, 38-37, as all nine of the Herd players who came on the court grabbed at least one board.

Marshall began the game with a three by Brooks as Clemson started 0-for-3 from the field. The back-and-forth battle got going right from the start as the first quarter finished with three lead changes and the score was tied twice. The Tigers ended the first frame with a one-point lead, 17-16, as Camree Cleg hit a three right before the buzzer.

Both teams struggled in the second quarter from the field as the defensive pressure intensified. Marshall shot 29.4 percent and Clemson hit just 18.8 percent from the field, but converted 4-of-4 from the line. An offensive rebound and putback by freshman Kia Sivils gave the Herd a one-point lead, 29-28, going into the halftime break.

Marshall jumped out to a seven-point lead in the third quarter before the Tigers rallied to take the lead with just under four minutes to play in the frame. The score stayed close as Clemson's largest lead was four, but a layup from redshirt junior Tana Driver and another right at the buzzer by Porter, tied the game at 47-47.

Clemson regained the lead with 7:23 to go in the contest (53-52) and held on for good. Marshall shot just 2-of-10 (20 percent) in the fourth quarter while the Tigers hit 50 percent (7-of-14) and converted 5-of-7 from the line.

Up next, Marshall returns to the Cam Henderson Center for two final non-conference games before getting into Conference USA action. The Towson Tigers visit Huntington on Saturday, Dec. 22, and then Delaware State comes in on Dec. 29. The Herd's first C-USA game of the season is set for Jan. 3 against Old Dominion.
