HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team returns to action with its second of back-to-back home games as the Tennessee State Tigers visit the Cam Henderson Center. Tipoff is set for Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Thundering Herd enters the game at 4-5 overall while the Tigers come in at 0-9. The Saturday afternoon contest is the first of back-to-back-to-back games against schools named the Tigers with Clemson and Towson up next for the Herd.
The game will be broadcast live on HerdVision on CUSAtv as Jake Griffith will have the call. The game will also be broadcast on 88.1 WMUL-FM and with audio streamed online at www.marshall.edu/wmul through one of the Listen Live links.
Last time out - vs. Cleveland State Dec. 8 - W, 86-64
The Herd dominated in picking up its fourth-straight home win with a 22-point victory over Cleveland State. Redshirt senior Taylor Porter lit up the scoreboard with a season-high 22 points and set a career-best hitting 6-of-9 from three. Porter added five assists and three steals. Senior Shayna Gore was second on the team with 20 points, with four three-pointers and had six assists. Sophomore Kristen Mayo established a career-high with eight assists and no turnovers. The starting guard trio of Porter, Gore and Mayo combined for 19 assists and just one turnover. Junior Ashley Saintigene received her first start of the season, coming in for the injured sophomore Taylor Pearson, and scored 11 points. Freshman Lorelei Roper and junior Jovana Vucetic contributed to the career-high party with four blocks and two blocks, respectively, in the win. The Herd opened the game shooting 62.5 percent from the field and finished the night hitting 47.2 percent with 12 made three-pointers. It was the third game of the season for Marshall with double-digits buckets from outside.
Conference USA Player of the Week
Taylor Porter was honored with the weekly award for the first time in her career with a couple of great performances. In the loss at Wisconsin, Porter scored a season-high 16 points and tied her career-high with eight boards. Back at home in the win over Cleveland State, the redshirt senior set a new season-high with 22 points, established a career-best with six made three-pointers, contributed five assists and three steals.
Milestone Watch
Shayna Gore reached 1,600 points in the win over Cleveland State with her 33rd career 20-point game. The senior enters the contest against Tennessee State with 1,601 career points and needs just nine more to pass Marshall Athletics Hall of Famer Sikeetha Shepard-Hall (2002-06) for third all-time in program history.
Scouting the Tigers
Tennessee State is looking for its first win of the season. The Tigers are coming off back-to-back losses to currently undefeated South Alabama and No. 5 Louisville, a combined 18-0 record. Tennessee State is getting outscored by almost 22 points per game while hitting on just 32.0 percent from the field and opponents are averaging 46.6 percent from the floor. The Tigers are also just averaging 22.4 percent from outside. Taylor Roberts leads the team with 15.1 points per game and has 19 steals. Tia Wooten is next with 12.9 points per game and six rebounds per contest. Jaden Wrightsell leads the Tigers with 7.4 boards per game.
Series History: Fifth all-time meeting, Marshall leads 4-0
Marshall and Tennessee State first met on the court on Dec. 15, 1991, a 74-55 win for the Herd in Huntington. Marshall dominated in the next two wins as well in 2005 (81-57) and 2008 (78-56), both in the Cam Henderson Center. The last meeting on Dec. 21, 2017, was the first trip to the Gentry Center for the Herd in the series and it was the closest matchup as well. Marshall came out with the six-point victory, 71-65, holding off a furious second-half comeback by the Tigers. The Herd started the game with a 19-point lead after the first quarter hitting 7-of-9 from three, and extended it to a 25-point advantage at the half. However, Tennessee State came roaring back outscoring Marshall 41-23 in the second half. Taylor Roberts came off the bench to score 27 points hitting 8-of-12 from the field and 10-of-11 from the line. Tia Wooten also finished in double-figures with 13 points. Shayna Gore led the way for the Herd with 19 points but also had seven turnovers. Kristen Mayo tied her career-high at the time with 14 points and had five assists. Talequia Hamilton and Ashley Saintigene combined for six blocked shots.

Marshall heads back out on the road for its final non-conference, away game of the season. The Herd travels to Clemson for its first meeting against the Tigers since a 45-37, overtime loss, on Dec. 21 2002.
