BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Marshall softball team dropped game one, 2-1, at UAB Saturday afternoon from Mary Bowers Field. The teams attempted to get through the second game of the doubleheader, and made it into the fifth before the rain became too much and the game was halted.
Marshall and UAB will pick up with game two Sunday at 1 p.m. eastern, and then get to game three.
"It was pretty tight the entire game," Herd head coach Jen Steele said. "We had runners in scoring position and didn't find a way to capitalize. The difference was issuing free passes in the sixth and then (UAB) getting the timely hit."
The Herd struggled to find its rhythm on offense with just six hits in game one. Freshman Grayson Radcliffe belted her second home run of the season to center in the top of the fifth to give Marshall a 1-0 lead.
The Blazers fought back in the bottom of the frame and scored two runs to take the lead. Marshall junior pitcher Abigail Tolbert received the start, pitched through five innings and allowed two runs on three hits. Tolbert struck out five. Junior Ali Burdette pitched the sixth inning for Marshall and allowed just one hit.
Senior Elicia D'Orazio recorded two hits and moved ahead of Caitlyn Jackson (2007-10) for seventh all-time with 214. Senior catcher Taylor McCord picked off one runner for the 23rd of her career. McCord also recorded her 48th runner caught stealing. She is second all-time in both categories.
When the teams step back out on the field Sunday, the halted game will continue in the top of the fifth inning with the score tied at 4-4. Marshall will be up with bases loaded, one out and senior Jordan Colliflower at the plate with a 2-0 count.
