Herd Falls in Series Finale to FIU

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall softball team dropped the final game of the series to the FIU Panthers, 9-5, Saturday afternoon at Dot Hicks Field. FIU took the series two games to one.
The Thundering Herd falls to 15-18-1 overall and 6-5-1 in Conference USA. FIU improves to 18-20 overall and 4-5 in conference.
Freshman Aly Harrell and junior Briana Daiss both went deep for the Herd. Harrell belted a solo shot, her third homer of the season, to get Marshall on the board in the second and tie the game at 1-1. Harrell also had a double and was walked once. Daiss hit a two-run shot, her second of the weekend, to center in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5. The junior slugger finished the game with three RBI as she also drove in senior Taylor McCord in the third with a sacrifice fly.
Seniors Jordan Colliflower and Elicia D'Orazio increased their respective hitting streaks. Colliflower is tied with Joscelyn Bitner (2006-09) and Kaelynn Greene (2013-16) for the fourth longest hitting streak in program history at 16 games. D'Orazio, who had a career-high 15-game hitting streak in 2017, is up to eight games.
The Panthers scored four runs in the seventh to take the lead, 9-5, and the eventual win.
Junior Ali Burdette took the loss in game three and is now 3-5 this season.
Marshall returns to Dot Hicks Field on Tuesday, April 3, with a doubleheader against St. Francis. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
