HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-Stephanie Smith and Marija Bogicevic won the final home matches of their Herd careers, but visiting Liberty threw a wrench in Marshall's senior day plans. The Flames defeated the Herd Thursday afternoon, 5-2, at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center.
"It was nice to see our three seniors pick up at least one win (singles or doubles) in their final home match," head coach John Mercer said. "We had our chances once again and failed to convert. We have to do a better job closing out matches.
Marshall had its chance to win the doubles point, serving for the point on multiple courts after Stephanie Smith and Silver won 6-1 on court 1. Bogicevic and Anna Smith fell on court 2, 7-5, after leading 5-4 and serving for the match. Brooke Lashway and Ana Marhuenda were defeated in a tiebreak, 7-6(8), in the deciding match.
Two of the Herd's three seniors won their final singles matches in Huntington. Stephanie Smith won her sixth straight match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Bogicevic set a new personal best with eight wins this season after a 6-2, 7-5 win. Anna Smith's eight-match win streak was snapped, 6-2, 6-1. Marhenda played a close match, but was defeated in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Lashway (6-3, 4-6, 6-1) and Silver (6-0, 4-6, 6-1) each battled back from first-set deficits to force a third set, but both were defeated to clinch the match for the Flames.
Marshall closes its regular season Saturday morning when it plays at defending Big South Conference champion Winthrop at 9 a.m.
