BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Marshall softball team lost, 4-1, in the series finale Sunday morning at WKU. The Hilltoppers take the series two games to one.
Marshall is now 23-24-1 overall and 11-9-1 in Conference USA. WKU improves to 26-20 and 9-9 in conference action.
"Unfortunately, today's result isn't surprising," Herd head coach Jen Steele said. "We didn't play good softball all weekend. We battled and competed yesterday, but we didn't execute any part of the game at a high level.
"When you only score in 4-of-22 innings, commit eight errors in three games, and give up seven extra base hits it's tough to win. WKU is a good team and they were hungry for wins after being on a losing skid."
The Thundering Herd got on the board first with a bases loaded walk in the first inning. Freshman Aly Harrell scored from third on sophomore Blakely Burch's tenth RBI of the season.
The Hilltoppers scored one run in the fourth to tie the game and then scored three in the sixth to take the lead.
Sophomore Kailee Williamson started the game for Marshall and pitched the first 3.2 innings. Junior Abigail Tolbert came on in relief in the fourth with the game tied and pitched the rest of the way, taking the loss.
"We have a responsibility to make sure we execute down the stretch," coach Steele said. "We have some time before Middle Tennessee, and we are looking to find our rhythm before then."
Marshall continues its road swing with a single game at Ohio on Tuesday, April 24 at 5 p.m.
