Softball Adds Three Transfers to the Herd Family

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall softball team announced the additions of three transfers. Junior Brooke Burns (UNC), senior Hannah Giammarino (Bowling Green) and junior Sierra Huerta (Moorpark College) join the Herd for the 2018-19 season.

Burns is an infielder from Columbia, S.C., and played her first two collegiate seasons at UNC. She has appeared in 38 games with seven runs scored. Burns scored the go-ahead run against North Carolina State in the 2017 ACC semifinals. She has ties to the state of West Virginia as her father played football at Glenville State and her grandfather played baseball at West Virginia State. Burns was a four-time all-state selection while starring for Chapin High School. She hit over .400 every year of her scholastic career and was a finalist for the 2015 South Carolina Softball Player of the Year as a junior.

Giammarino is an outfielder from Amanda, Ohio, and played three seasons for Bowling Green. She appeared in 98 games with 79 starts for the Falcons. Giammarino recorded 52 hits including six doubles, one triple and three home runs. She started 47 games as a sophomore in 2017 setting career highs in runs, hits, walks and stolen bases while batting .250 for the year. Giammarino played high school and travel ball with current Marshall senior Hayden Ellis. The two helped lead the Teays Valley High School Vikings to its first state title as seniors in 2015.

Huerta is an infielder from Moorpark, Calif., and played two seasons for Moorpark College. Huerta finished her time at the junior college having played in 70 games for the Raiders. She hit .469 in her two seasons finishing with 100 hits, 107 RBI, 75 runs, 28 doubles, 17 home runs and 18 stolen bases. Huerta struck out just six times in 213 at-bats over two years including just once in 2018 in 109 at-bats. She slugged .859 and on base percentage of over .500. Huerta is an all-around athlete as she also won first place in shot put in the 2016 Ventura County Championships.
