CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at No. 19 Virginia Tuesday night from Klockner Stadium.
The Thundering Herd drops to 2-3-1 and the Cavaliers improve to 2-0-2.
"Tough match," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "It's a difficult place to come and play. We played hard in the first half but it took us 45 minutes to find our level. We made a mistake but conceded a goal which was an excellent long distance strike.
"Second half we played really well and could've won that match. I thought we were really excellent."
Marshall battled its way through the first half, denying several chances for the Cavaliers. Redshirt junior Paulo Pita recorded all four of his saves in the first half. Virginia finally knocked in a goal with one minute and 57 seconds left in the first half to take the 1-0 lead.
The Herd defense stiffened up in the second half and held Virginia without a shot on goal. Marshall's offense managed seven total shots with one on goal coming in the second half.
"Credit to UVA, they're a top-25 program, but if we can continue that type of performance from the second half, we will get ourselves there," coach Grassie said. "I'm actually taking great positives from our ability to play out of pressure and match their level. We didn't want the second half to end. If we continue to play at that level we will win a ton of games."
The Thundering Herd returns to the pitch with a Conference USA match at South Carolina on Sunday, Sept. 16. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
