BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Marshall volleyball team picked up its second-straight win Saturday afternoon, beating the IUPUI Jaguars (25-19, 25-27, 25-19, 26-24) three sets to one.

With the win, Marshall has now been victorious in three of the last four matches and finished out the BGSU Invitational with a 2-1 record.

"Coming back from 14-7 down in set 4 and getting the game tied up at 22's was a very big task and shows again that our team just won't quit," head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "We have to work on those slow starts for sure, but they have a lot of confidence in themselves."

Redshirt sophomore Ciara Debell led all players with 26 kills in the match. The Ocala, Fla., native finished with 67 kills over the three-match tournament. Senior Shelby Conley chipped in 13 kills and junior Ivana Trencheva recorded 10. Freshman Gabrielle Coulter excelled in running the offense with 52 assists, while junior Amber Weber added 31 digs.

"Games one through three had very similar feelings as we pushed out to a lead in both," coach Jacobs said. "But then let up with some unforced errors and good serving by IUPUI and they worked their way back into the match. Obviously, the big difference was that our team had the answers in sets one and three and were really good from 20 to 25. Set two we kept fighting but just couldn't regain the momentum after IUPUI closed a pretty significant gap. And again, set four showed the real heart this team is willing to compete with."

Marshall took the first set, but it proved to be closely contested early, featuring three ties. However, the Herd never trailed in the opening frame and lead by as many as four points. Marshall pulled away at the end of the set, taking it 25-19, thanks to back-to-back kills from Debell.

The second set proved to be even closer than the first, with nine ties and five lead changes. Marshall dropped set two, 27-25, but rallied following the intermission.

Coming out of the break, the Jaguars opened the third set on a quick 2-1 run to take the lead, but Marshall capitalized on the three IUPUI attack errors in the set, taking a four-point lead on a kill from G. Coulter.

Debell recorded two-straight kills to push the Marshall lead back to three, 22-19, after the Jaguars cut the lead in half. A bad set by IUPUI and a kill from Conley helped the Herd take set three, 25-19, to extend its lead, two sets to one.

In set four, IUPUI again jumped out to a quick lead, ahead by as many as six points. Following a Marshall timeout, and another Jaguars error, the Herd cut the deficit to just one point before taking the lead for just the second time in the set, 24-23, thanks to Debell's 25th kill of the match.

After an IUPUI timeout, Debell and senior Lauren Mattmuller put Marshall up for good, recording back-to-back kills to end the match.

"Ciara and Amber were pretty special all weekend and certainly deserved the all-tournament team accolade," coach Jacobs said. "Ciara put up some very special numbers that helped us get two big wins. But it was Amber that put in a weekend performance that I'm not sure I've seen from one of our Libero's. I made the point in the locker room after the match, we had the Libero of the year in C-USA just two years ago, and I don't remember Allie digging over 8 balls a set over a three-match stretch. Pretty incredible.

"Shelby and Lolo played a lot of sets this weekend and I'm really proud of their workload. This young team needs that from them."

After being on the road for six-straight matches, Marshall returns to the Cam Henderson Center on Friday, Sept. 21, to open Conference USA play. The Herd will take on the Charlotte 49ers with first serve set for 6 p.m.
