HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team is set to begin Conference USA play against the Charlotte 49ers, Friday in the Cam Henderson Center at 6 p.m.

The Thundering Herd enters the match at 7-7 and the 49ers come in at 9-6.

"Always an exciting time of the year to be going into conference," Herd head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "I think we have gotten a lot of questions answered. Time to get going and hope we can get healthy quick.

"Charlotte is always a super tough match for us and it seems to have become a bit of a rivalry. (Charlotte head coach) Karen (Weatherington) does a phenomenal job and has built that program up very quickly along with her very experienced staff.  Hopefully we will have a nice showing and make it a strong match."

Marshall has won three of its past four matches going back to a contest with Georgia Tech that was full of Herd comebacks. Marshall finished the BGSU Invitational 2-1 with the lone loss coming to Bowling Green, the defending Mid-American Conference Champions. The Herd swept Nicholls State and then took down IUPUI in four-sets. Redshirt sophomore Ciara Debell and junior Amber Weber were named to the all-tournament team.

Weber was also honored as the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week. The Ocala, Fla., native recorded 91 kills during the three matches. Weber leads the Herd with 273 digs. Gabrielle Coulter was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week after recording 128 more assists at the BGSU Invite. Coulter leads Marshall with 455 assists.

Debell leads the Herd with 209 kills and freshman Joelle Coulter is second with 110.

The 49ers are coming off a five-set victory over USF. Senior Reeana Richardson led the way with 29 kills and has 245 for the season. The transfer from Hampton now has 1,123 kills in her career as Richardson came to Charlotte with 878 kills in 76 matches with the Pirates. Molly Shaw (143) and Jocelyn Stoner (103) have both contributed over 100 kills this season.

Freshman setter Nya Steele leads the 49ers with 541 assists. Junior Yumi Garcia is the defensive leader for Charlotte and has 384 digs.
