Five-team hidden dual tournament to take place Saturday and Sunday
LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Marshall tennis team begins its 49th season of play Saturday at the Liberty Invitational. The Herd is joined in the two-day hidden dual tournament by host institution Liberty, Wright State, Longwood and James Madison.
Â
Marshall returns one player from its 2017-18 campaign. Sophomore Anna Smith led the Herd in singles wins (11), doubles wins (11) and overall wins (22) during the spring season. Smith also had a team-high eight-match win streak during the middle of the season. The Herd has to replace five players from its 2017-18 team, including All-Conference USA and All-Academic performer Stephanie Smith, who played at the top position last year.
Â
Head coach John Mercer signed a trio of freshmen who will make their Herd debuts this weekend. Madi Ballow and Liz Stefancic were each four-star recruits out of high school in Texas and Illinois, respectively. Victoria Walter is a highly-touted Austrian who is expected to compete near the top of the lineup for Marshall.
Â
Marshall will see three of its four opponents this weekend a second time. The Herd plays host to Wright State and James Madison and will travel to Liberty during the spring season.
