Tennis Sweeps Sunday Singles Matches at Liberty Invitational

Herd goes 5-1 overall on final day, drops just one singles set
LYNCHBURG, Va. — Marshall tennis closed its opening tournament of the 2018-19 season Sunday by winning all four of its singles matches at the Liberty Invitational.
As a team, the Herd posted a 5-1 record in the final session, dropping just one doubles match and one set of a singles match.
"It was a very good last day for us," head coach John Mercer said. "It's always a good sign when you compete hard and win all your singles matches on the final day of a tournament."
Madi Ballow and Victoria Walter continued their strong starts for the Herd Sunday as the two freshmen teamed up to defeat Longwood's Jamie Breunig and Yulia Almiron, 6-2. Anna Smith and Liz Stefancic fell in a tiebreaker to Wright State's Madison Riley and Haily Morgan, 7-6.
Walter won her second straight singles match of the tournament in a tiebreaker over Morgan, 6-2, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (10-1). Ballow posed a straight-sets win over Longwood's Anika Tylek, 6-2, 6-1. Stefancic picked up the first singles win of her collegiate career over Riley, 7-5, 6-2. Smith defeated Wright State's Luisa Pelayo by retirement. Smith was leading the match in the first set, 4-1, at the time of Pelayo's retirement.

Marshall returns to the court Friday when it begins play at the Hokie Fall Invite in Blacksburg, Virginia. Virginia Tech is the host institution for the three-day tournament.
