HIGH POINT, N.C. - The Marshall women's soccer team defeated the High Point Panthers, 1-0, on Friday evening from Vert Stadium.

The Thundering Herd improves to 2-3-1 and the Panthers are now 1-5-1.

"Great team win tonight," Herd head coach Kevin Long said. "We saw a much better possession to start the game which allows us to play smarter and with greater organization in the back."

Redshirt junior Jayne Lawman led the scoring efforts for the Herd. Lawman scored in the 70th minute to record her second goal of the season. Marshall recorded four shots on goal compared to one for the Panthers with junior keeper Megan Bonelli getting the save. The teams battled for the remaining 20 minutes of the contest. High Point had several shot opportunities but could not capitalize.

"Jayne scored a clutch goal taking her time off a great combination play," Long said.

The Marshall defense continued to shut down a majority of scoring opportunities for High Point. The Thundering Herd allowed only seven Panther shots over the 90-minute contest.

Marshall stays in North Carolina and travels to Boiling Springs to play at Gardner-Webb on Sunday Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. The Herd then returns to Hoops Family Field on Sept. 14 to face Florida Atlantic at 7 p.m.
