Thundering Herd falls to Flames, defeats Camels

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Marshall's Swimming and Diving program earned a split in its tri-meet with Liberty and Campbell this weekend, an event that was held in the Liberty Natatorium.

The Thundering Herd dropped a 249.5-112.5 decision to the host Flames, but downed the Camels 195-158.

Catherine Bendziewicz finished the tri-meet with another win in the 100 Freestyle (51.90). The Herd's 400 IM swimmers also saw a win by Caroline Wanner (4:34.25) and a second place finish from Madeline Schaffer (4:36.87).

Marshall's divers also took part in day two's session. Maddie Young finished with a score of 174.00, earning a third-place finish and Sarah McGlumphy claimed fourth (153.45).

"The second session was much improved from yesterday," said Marshall head coach Ian Walsh. "We did a nice job competing and getting our hand on the wall. As we head into the final month before conference, we're looking forward to sharpening up some race details."

"We went up against two very talented and well-coached teams this weekend. We walked away 1-1, which we were pleased with. Cara Martin had a tough event schedule today and handled it very well. Catherine getting the win in the 100 Free was another highlight of the weekend. Our divers had another great session, putting up lifetime-best and season-best scores. So many people had a part in the win and, as a staff, we were very proud of that."

Marshall's Martin and Elisha Walker swam the 1,000 Free. Martin finished with a solid third-place finish with a time of 10:38.78 and Walker was fourth in 10:41.03.

"Tomorrow morning will be another challenge at James Madison and we look forward to finishing our dual meet season down in Harrisonburg," Walsh said.

Marshall will continue a weekend filled with competition Sunday at 11 a.m. at JMU in the program's regular season finale.
