Freshman averaged 11.7 points in three games while making first two starts in conference play.
IRVING, Texas – Men's basketball freshman guard Taevion Kinsey was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week Monday (Jan. 7) for the first time this season, as announced by the league office.
"He (Kinsey) gives us a small Penava because he can handle the ball and when he gets to the rim his length allows him to catch things and he's quick," fifth-year head coach Dan D'Antoni said.
Kinsey had a stellar shooting week making 13-of-18 attempts from the field while averaging 11.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.3 blocks and 1 steal per game. He also made the first two starts of his career in the team's first two conference games.
In his first start at ODU, Kinsey had a career night by setting or tying then/current season and career-highs in seven different categories including minutes (35), made three-pointers (2), threes attempted (3), rebounds (7), assists (3), blocks (3) and field goals attempted (6) while making five shots to score 13 points.
The freshman guard followed that up with his first-career 40-minute game. He also tied his career-high of 14 points while making 50 percent of his shots and going 6-for-7 from the charity stripe at Charlotte. Kinsey also brought down five rebounds, dished out three assists and had a pair of steals in the win.
In the loss at No. 4 Virginia, Kinsey scored 8 points while making all four of his shots.
Men's basketball is back in action on Saturday (Jan. 12) to take on preseason-conference favorite Western Kentucky at 7 p.m. after a 32-game span between home games.
