Fort Hays State Hall of Fame Release

HAYS, Kan. – Marshall softball pitching coach Maddie Holub will be inducted into the Fort Hays State Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday. Holub was an all-around star for the Tigers from 2010-13 and became the first pitcher in NCAA Division II history to throw perfect games in back-to-back starts.

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony is set to take place on Saturday, Oct. 26 and the Memorial Union Ballroom on the Fort Hays State campus at 9:30 a.m. The inductees will also be recognized at halftime of the football game against Nebraska-Kearney at 2 p.m.

"It's an absolute honor to represent Fort Hays Softball and my hometown of Hays, Kansas in the FHSU Athletics Hall of Fame," Holub said. "This is a dream moment in any athlete's career, and I feel blessed that I can experience it at a place that has left such a special mark on my life. I am excited to head back to Hays and celebrate with my family, friends, coaches, teammates, and the Tiger community."

Holub put her name all throughout the FHSU softball record book as not just a pitcher, but a hitter as well. And even six seasons after she played her final game for the Tigers, a search of the name Holub in the record book pulls up 93 results.

The star athlete had a great career at Thomas More Prep-Marian High School in Hays, Kan., as a four-time all-state, all-area and all-league selection. The three-time All-State First Team honoree, who bat .695 and struck out 171 batters her senior year, decided to stay in Hays and play for her hometown team.

In her freshman season at Fort Hays State, the Tigers witnessed a glimpse of what was to come from the future Hall of Famer. In 2010, Holub was named a Daktronics All-Region Second selection and an All-MIAA (Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association) Second Team utility player as she set school single-season records for RBI (52) and runs scored (51). She also fired off 173 strikeouts in 145.1 innings pitched and tied the then school record for most strikeouts in a game with 15 against Southwest Baptist.

She continued to be a team leader in most hitting and pitching categories throughout her sophomore and junior seasons. Then she was even more dominant in her senior year in 2013.

Holub was honored as an NFCA and Daktronics All-America First Team selection and was also named both the MIAA Pitcher and Player of the Year. The first player in conference history to be named both in the same season. In the circle, she finished with a record of 29-4, had a 1.03 ERA, 41 appearances, 26 complete games, 13 shutouts and an astounding 345 strikeouts in 224 innings. She threw six no-hitters and had back-to-back perfect games on April 6 and 12. Her 29 wins bested her own school record set the year before by 10 victories. On the offensive side, Holub bat .426, with 19 home runs, 56 RBI, 62 runs scored and 10 stolen bases.

From just that season she still holds the FHSU single-season records for appearances, wins, winning percentage (.879), fewest hits in innings pitched (.43 or 3.01 per seven innings), strikeouts, lowest ERA, most no-hitters (6), runs scored, home runs, RBI, total bases (148), slugging percentage (.841), and walks (34). She tied single-game records with two home runs three times, strikeouts with 17 in two contests and of course the only perfect games in FHSU history.

In her Tiger career Holub is still tops in wins with77 (second place is 62), winning percentage at .713 (second place is .625), strikeouts with 974 (second place is 614), strikeouts per innings pitched with 1.34 (second place is .88), runs scored with 183 (second place is 127), hits with 255 (second place is 246), home runs with 46 (second place is 29), RBI with 160 (second place is 134), and total bases with 449 (second place is 334).

Following her illustrious Tigers tenure, Holub traveled overseas to play professionally in Italy for Labadini Collecchio and tossed a perfect game in a six-inning win in her very first outing. She delivered another no-hitter later in the season and finished the year with a 0.78 ERA.

After her playing career she has been a star as a coach as well. Holub first went to St. Leo University in Tampa, Fla., and was named the NFCA National Assistant Coach of the Year for Division II in 2015. Her pitching staff at St. Leo set team records and helped lead the Lions to back-to-back Division II postseason appearances. St. Leo also made it to the World Series in 2018.

In her very short time with the Herd softball family, Holub has brought her wealth of knowledge to Huntington and made an immediate impact in the 2019 season. Marshall had one of its biggest win turnarounds in team history (17) and played in the Conference USA Tournament Championship game as well as the National Invitational Softball Championship. Her pitching staff broke a 22-year old team record with 16 shutouts and senior Abigail Tolbert finished the year tied for eighth in the nation in shutouts (11), tied for 11th in wins (28) and in the top 50 for strikeouts (187). Under Holub's tutelage, the senior pitcher was named second team All-Conference USA, C-USA All-Tournament Team and the NISC Lynchburg Regional All-Tournament Team. Tolbert threw three shutouts in the C-USA Tournament including two over the No. 1 overall seed, North Texas Mean Green.

The other members of the Fort Hays State Class of 2019 are Marvin Andrews (men's basketball, 1951-55), Kent Bauer (track and field, 1959-62), Chris (Biser) Drea (women's basketball, 1986-90), Jack Harms (cross country/track and field, 1963-66), Bill Hall (baseball, 1974-76) and Kelly (Skidmore) Gunning (volleyball, 2002-05).
