ATHENS, Ohio – The Marshall women's basketball team lost its first game of the season at Ohio, 67-51, Wednesday night. Redshirt senior Khadaijia Brooks led the Herd with 13 points and six rebounds.

The Thundering Herd falls to 2-1. The Bobcats improve to 2-1.

"Holding Ohio to 67 at home, if you would have told me that before, I would have taken it because they can really score," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "I think that what we decided to do kept them off balance for a long time, but when Burke hit a couple big three's, we didn't mount much of a comeback after that. Over time we have to get grittier and we have to get tougher and keep building to try and get better. It's a process and they know that, but that was a good team and they will be right there at the end in the MAC."

Brooks tallied her season-high in points as she was 3-of-6 from three in the contest including one on a bank shot in the second quarter as the shot clock expired. Junior Kristen Mayo scored 10 and has been in double figures in all three games this season. The junior guard also grabbed six boards, added four assists and two steals.

Freshman Savannah Wheeler totaled nine points and had three steals. Junior Taylor Pearson was the third player for the Herd with six rebounds. Senior Ashley Saintigene recorded three blocked shots which gives her 10 for the season and puts her in a tie for seventh all-time with Chris McClurkin (1984-88) with 91 career rejections.

The game began as a back-and-forth affair with both teams hustling all over the floor. Brooks got Marshall on the board first with a jumper and less than two minutes later a layup from Pearson, the Herd led 6-3. After Ohio scored five-straight points, a three-pointer from Mayo put Marshall ahead again, 9-8. With the game tied at 14-14 with 3:14 remaining in the first, Ohio went on an 8-0 run to end the period leading 22-14.

The second quarter did not start well for the Herd as the Bobcats began the frame with a 7-0 run to make it a combined 15-0 run from the first to the 8:29 mark in the second. Marshall rallied after a timeout with a 10-0 run to close back within five, 29-24. A three from Brooks finally broke the scoring drought, then the redshirt senior grabbed a steal on the other end of the floor that led to another Herd basket. Marshall outscored Ohio 21-14 in the second and went into the halftime break down by one, 36-35.

In the third quarter, Marshall took its first lead (37-36) since the 5:39 mark in the first quarter when Saintigene hit a layup with 8:59 on the clock. After Ohio regained the lead, the teams began trading baskets with the Bobcats able to stay just ahead. Marshall trailed by eight, 52-44, before layups from Wheeler and junior Dazha Congleton dropped the deficit to four to end the third, 52-48.

Marshall struggled in the fourth quarter as Ohio took the lead into double-digits. The Herd defense still forced several bad shots from Ohio as the Bobcats missed 10 shots in the fourth including six three-pointers. As Marshall went to its bench in the fourth, freshman Paige Shy recorded her first career blocked shot on a layup attempt.

Marshall returns to the Cam Henderson Center for back-to-back home games. Coppin State visits Huntington first on Nov. 19 with tipoff at 11 a.m. Then the Morgan State Bears come to town on Nov. 21 with tipoff at 5 p.m.
