Marshall Championship Match Notes
NORFOLK, Va. – For the first time since 2009, the top two seeds in the Conference USA Men's Soccer Tournament will meet in the Championship Match. The No.1 seed, and 13th-ranked Marshall Thundering Herd takes on the No. 2 seed, and 17th-ranked Charlotte 49ers Sunday at 1 p.m. for the title and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Thundering Herd enters the match with an overall record of 14-2-3. The 49ers come in at 11-2-4. It is Marshall's first trip to the C-USA Championship match since 2015. This will be the third-straight appearance for Charlotte after losing the last two years by scores of 1-0 to FIU in 2017 and Kentucky in 2018.

Marshall earned the top overall seed in the conference tournament after finishing with a 5-1-1 record in league play and defeating the FIU Panthers in the regular season finale. The Herd received a first round bye and awaited the winner of No. 4 seed Kentucky and No. 5 seed Florida Atlantic. The Wildcats won 2-0 in the last two minutes to advance to the semi-final to face Marshall.
The Herd fought through a scoreless battle through most of the match. Neither team could get too many shots on target because of the play of both defenses. UK outshot Marshall 7-2 in the first half, however none of the shots were on goal. The Herd had the first three shots on goal of the match in the second half, but Enrique Facusse made the save on all three. Marshall's redshirt senior keeper made his lone save of the match in the 75th minute to keep it scoreless. Less than two minutes later, the Herd's offense took off on a breakaway. Junior Jamil Roberts found sophomore Vinicius Fernandes with a cross to right side to put Marshall on the scoreboard.
The Herd's defense played a superb match and helped keep the ball away from Pita through the remaining 23 minutes and 52 seconds for the win. With the victory, Marshall advanced to the C-USA Championship for the third time in program history. The Herd is looking for its first tournament championship victory after losing to Tulsa back in 2009 – also the last time the two top seeds faced off in the title match – and again in 2015 to FIU.
Opponent
The Charlotte 49ers also earned a first round bye with securing the two seed. Charlotte waited for the winner of No. 3 seed FIU and No. 6 seed South Carolina. The Panthers took out some revenge for an earlier season loss, defeating the Gamecocks 3-0.
In a cold and wet match Friday night, the 49ers came away with the 1-0 win over FIU. All-Conference performer Teddy Chaouche scored on a pass from Joe Brito in the 14th minute and the 49ers held on defensively the rest of the way. FIU outshot Charlotte by a slim margin of 13-11 and were tied 3-3 in shots on goal. Elliot Panicco made all three stops for Charlotte.
The 49ers have now won its last three matches and are looking for its second Conference USA Title. It is the fourth overall trip for Charlotte as the program won the championship in 2013, its first season in C-USA, and then have lost the last two.
