Players now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall men's soccer seniors Carlos Diaz-Salcedo and Jonas Westmeyer were named CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) First Team Academic All-District, the organization announced Thursday.
Honorees selected as First Team Academic All-District advance to the Academic All-America ballot. Academic All-America honors will be announced in early December.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The nation's schools are broken up into eight districts and the state of West Virginia is in District 2 along with Washington D.C., Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Only two other players from Conference USA were named along with Diaz-Salcedo and Westmeyer. Hagay Jalon of Florida Atlantic and Luca Mayr of South Carolina were honored in District 4.
"Two excellent examples of what it takes to succeed as a student and an athlete," Herd head Chris Grassie said. "Both guys are quality players for us on the pitch, and have the dedication, focus and time management skills needed to excel in the classroom. Both guys have been captains for us this year and have played well in almost every match this season. Their level of dedication is inspiring.
"They are great examples to our younger student-athletes of what it takes to be successful. They both check all the boxes of our championship behaviors: humility, intensity, grit, and Marshall first. Well done to Carlos and Jonas, we will miss them both."
Diaz-Salcedo is a two-time Conference USA Academic Medalist – overall grade point average of 3.75 or better – and is in line to make it three-in-a-row with a 3.82 GPA as an International Business and Finance major. The Barcelona, Spain native has been at Marshall all four of his collegiate seasons and has played in 63 contests, 57 starts, and 5,066 minutes on the pitch. He has played every minute of 42 matches in his career including 11 contests this season. Diaz-Salcedo is a major key to the success of the Marshall defense playing in the backfield. He has helped the Herd to its first Top 25 rankings in 18 years as well as holding opponents to just 14 goals in 17 matches. The senior captain has also helped lead Marshall to outscoring opponents 13-2 in C-USA matches. Diaz-Salcedo has been a member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll since he was a freshman for maintaining a GPA of 3.00 or better and was named to the C-USA All-Academic Team in 2018.
Westmeyer earned the C-USA Academic Medal in 2018-19 at the end of his first year at Marshall after transferring from the University of Munster in Germany. Westmeyer looks to make it two-for-two with a 4.00 GPA as a business major going for his MBA. In his almost two full seasons with the Green & White, Westmeyer has appeared in 37 contests, started 29 and played 2,683 minutes on the pitch. Westmeyer has seven career goals and 11 assists. His last two goals were probably the biggest of his career as game-winners at Oakland and against No. 15 Kentucky. His winner at Oakland came in the 81st minute on a free kick that curled just inside the upper 90 in the left corner in front of the outstretched glove of the keeper. Westmeyer scored the lone goal in the 1-0 victory over 15th-ranked Kentucky at home on Senior Day in the 64th minute. He was named to the College Soccer News National Team on Nov. 4.
Marshall returns to the pitch on Friday at 7 p.m. against No. 19 FIU for the regular season finale. The winner will secure the No. 1 seed going into the Conference Tournament (Nov. 13-17) and the regular season championship.
