Women’s Basketball Back in Action at Home against Norfolk State

Tipoff in the Cam scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team is set for its second game of the 2019-20 season as the Norfolk State Spartans come to town. Tipoff is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd is 1-0. The Spartans come in at 0-1.

The Herd began the season with an 89-40 victory over the Kentucky Christian College Knights on Tuesday in the Cam. Marshall forced the Knights into 33 turnovers with 24 coming from steals. That was the most in a game for the Herd since the last time Marshall played KCU in 2017 (26 steals).
Junior Kristen Mayo led with 19 points as four players for Marshall scored in double figures. Mayo also led the team with five steals and added three boards and three assists. Freshman Savannah Wheeler was next with 18 as she had a great career debut. Wheeler played 20 minutes off the bench and shot 6-of-9 from the field, 2-of-3 from three and 4-of-4 from the line. She added three assists and four steals.
Junior Taylor Pearson scored the first eight points of the game and even hit the first two three-pointers of the season for the Herd as well. Pearson finished the game with 12 points, led the team with five assists and grabbed four rebounds. Redshirt senior Khadaijia Brooks finished with 11 points and led the team with eight rebounds. Junior Dazha Congleton had a good game in her debut back in her hometown. Congleton played 23 minutes off the bench, scored eight points, hauled in six boards and tied with Mayo for the lead with five steals.
As a team, Marshall shot 50 percent (37-of-74) from the field and 40 percent (6-of-15) from three. The team was a perfect 9-for-9 from the line.
Opponent
The Spartans began the year with a 67-48 loss at home against Liberty. Norfolk State trailed by 11 at the half (37-26), but began to make a comeback in the third quarter outscoring the Flames 16-12. Liberty took over in the fourth holding the Spartans to just six points on the way to the 19-point win. Norfolk State shot 44 percent (11-of-25) in the first half but only 21.2 percent (7-of-33) in the second half. The Spartans were 1-of-4 from three in the first half and 0-of-9 in the second half. The team was also 11-of-27 from the line.
Chanette Hicks led Norfolk State with 18 points, four assists and added four rebounds. De'Janaire Deas and Blaire Thomas tied for the lead with six boards.
Hicks sat out the 2018-19 season after transferring from Virginia Tech. The redshirt senior guard was a top scorer during her three seasons with the Hokies, averaging over 16 points a game as a sophomore and 12 points a game her junior year, with a total of 1,099 points. Hicks put up a career-high 29 points at Georgia Tech back in 2017.
Under head coach Larry Vickers the Spartans have steadily improved. Vickers took over during the 2015-16 season when Norfolk State finished the year 3-24, coaching the final 11 games when the Spartans earned all three wins for the year. In 2016-17, his first full season at the helm, Norfolk State went 15-15, then 18-11 in 2017-18, and 17-15 in 2018-19 with a loss to Bethune-Cookman in the MEAC Tournament Championship game. He has an overall record of 53-50 coming into the match up in Huntington.
