HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall men's soccer senior center back Illal Osmanu was named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America Second Team, the organization announced Wednesday. Osmanu is the first player in Marshall history honored on the Scholar All-America team.

"I'm so proud to have coached Illal and he's very worthy of this award," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said.

2019 was a season of firsts for the Marshall men's soccer squad, and Osmanu was a major force. The Herd won its first ever Conference USA Regular Season title, C-USA Tournament Championship title, berth to the NCAA Tournament, NCAA Tournament victory as well as first ever named an All-American (Milo Yosef) and now first Scholar All-America honor. The Herd was ranked No. 11 in the final United Soccer Coaches Poll as well. Marshall's highest ranking ever.

Osmanu was a defensive leader for the Herd over the past three seasons while carrying a 3.40 cumulative grade point average as a sport management major. He started 58 of a possible 59 matches in his Marshall career and logged 5,217 minutes on the pitch. Osmanu only missed 14 minutes this season dealing with a minor injury at the end of the UTRGV contest and played every minute of the other 21 matches. The senior's skill on the back line helped the Herd to allow just 20 in 22 matches this season. The Accra, Ghana native was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week back-to-back times in October as the Herd worked its way into the Top 25 rankings, for the first time since 2001.

Osmanu adds this honor along with the selection to the All-Conference USA First Team, the United Soccer Coaches All-South Region First Team, and the Scholar All-South Region First Team. He was also one of four players from Conference USA selected to the Scholar All-America team.
