TOWSON, Md. – The Marshall women's basketball team fought hard but ultimately fell at the end on the road to the Towson Tigers, 59-56, Saturday afternoon in the SECU Arena. The back-and-forth battle featured nine ties and 13 lead changes.

The Thundering Herd is now 5-6 and the Tigers improve to 4-6.

"We are an improving basketball team," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "If I could have had this team a few games ago I think things would be a little different. I feel like our offensive execution is as high as it has ever been in my time here. We just need to get more out of it. But, I am proud of this team. They stood tall against a very athletic Towson team, that may be one of the most athletic we will face all year, and we were right there in the end.

"We just have to get back to it and keep grinding."

Redshirt senior Khadaijia Brooks led Marshall with 15 points and nine boards, and moved her rebounding streak to 74-straight games. She added one block and is now 14th all-time in program history with 62. Senior Ashley Saintigene played a great game with 10 points, four boards and two blocks. Both of her blocked shots came within the first few minutes of the game and forced Towson out of the middle on offense. Saintigene has had two or more blocks in 10-of-11 games this season and is now tied with Chukwuka Ezeigbo (2011-15) for sixth all-time in team history with 115.

Senior Kristen Mayo ended the game with 11 points scoring five points in the third and four in the fourth at crucial moments late in the game. Junior Dazha Congleton pulled in a career-high eight rebounds and added six points.

Marshall came out strong in the first quarter with the offensive execution working and the defense making stops with a 21-12 lead at the end of the period. The Herd tallied four blocks in the first quarter.

Towson battled back in the second, outscoring Marshall 20-12, and going in at the break down by one. The Tigers took advantage of some free throw opportunities and Nukiya Mayo hit two three's in the quarter to help cut the Herd lead.

The two teams continued to trade baskets in the third quarter and ended the period tied at 46-46.

The fourth quarter was much of the same with key baskets and big stops by both sides. Congleton grabbed the defensive rebound for Marshall on three-straight possessions to take away a second chance for Towson. Kionna Jeter gave Towson a two-point lead, 54-52, with under 90 seconds remaining. The Herd responded as Mayo drove the lane for a layup on the right side to tie the game.

Two successful free throws for the Tigers put it back out to a two-point lead and then Mayo did it again with another basket and just 26 seconds left. Towson hit a three with 1.9 seconds remaining and Marshall called timeout. The Herd had a great play as junior Taylor Pearson got the ball in to freshman Paige Shy who made the catch on the run, turned and fired for the basket but just missed as the Tigers held on for the win.

Marshall will get a short break before getting into Conference USA action at Rice on Jan. 2.
