Taylor Scores 27 Points in Men’s Basketball Loss at Northern Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Marshall men's basketball (5-7) made a late comeback, but it ultimately came up short as the Herd fell to Northern Iowa on the road (11-1), 88-80, at the McLeod Center on Sunday afternoon.
Redshirt freshman Andrew Taylor poured 27 points into the basket on a 10-for-18 shooting night from the field. The guard added five rebounds, four assists and four steals to his stat line
Junior guard Jarrod West joined Taylor in double figures with 17 points. He went 6-for-14 from the field with three rebounds.
Sophomore Taevion Kinsey and redshirt sophomore Iran Bennett brought up the end of a quartet of Herd student-athletes scoring 10 or more points with 15 and 11, respectively. Bennett finished tied for the team-high in rebounds with Taylor at five and Kinsey tied Taylor for the game-high in steals with four.
It was a slow start for both teams at the first media break. UNI led 5-2 with both teams shooting a combined 3-for-13 from the field.
The Herd trailed by as many as five points in the first nine minutes of the contest, but it went on a 6-0 run across a span of 2:10, with a layup from freshman Marko Sarenac giving the team its first lead, 19-18, with 9:23 left in the half.
Five minutes later Northern Iowa started to pick up steam and led by 10, 32-22, with just under five minutes left in the opening stanza. However, the Herd fought back and only trailed 41-38 at halftime as a West three just missed as it clanked off the front of the rim.
The Panthers started the second half outscoring Marshall 18-8 as MU trailed 59-45 with 14:57 on the clock at the under-16 timeout.
Head coach Dan D'Antoni was ejected with 13 minutes left in the game as he received his second technical foul for arguing with the refs. The Herd carried the fire of its head coach and went on a 6-0 run after his ejection in the next minute of play/
MU fired off a couple more runs late and brought the contest within six with 40 ticks left, but it ultimately fell to the Panthers.
NOTES
Taylor's 27-point game was the first time in his career with 20 or more points. Taylor has now opened his career with 10 or more points in two of his first three games, scoring eight points in the other contest.
Kinsey and West have each scored 10 or more points in 11 of the 12 games this season.
Bennett has scored at least 11 points in each of his last three games.
Taylor is the fourth Marshall men's basketball student-athlete to score 20 points in a game this season, joining West, Kinsey and Bennett.
UNI shot 50 percent from the field and from three-point range making 26 total shots with nine of those from beyond the arc.

Marshall finishes 2019 and non-conference play at the Cleveland Classic on Dec. 29 against Duquesne at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, the home of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
