HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall men's basketball (2-5) had three in double-figure scoring, but came out on the wrong end of an 85-73 loss to the Akron Zips at home on Wednesday night at the Cam Henderson Center.
"We came out flat early," Marshall head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the loss. "They had four or five offensive rebounds in a row. We didn't seem be able to hit shots and make the big plays. It put us into scramble mode."
Junior Jarrod West scored a team-best 17 points in the contest on a 7-for-15 night from the field. The guard also had four rebounds and four steals in the loss.
Sophomore Taevion Kinsey and redshirt sophomore Iran Bennett rounded out the trio of Herd student-athletes with 10 or more points with 15 and 13, respectively. Bennett grabbed a team-high six rebounds as Kinsey dished out five assists to lead MU.
Akron was led by a pair of 20-point efforts by Loren Cristian Jackson and Xeyrius Williams who scored 28 and 25 points, respectively. Jackson added five assists and five rebounds on an 8-of-16 night from the field, including going 8-for-8 from the free-throw line, while Williams grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for a double-double and made 10 of his 22 attempts from the field.
The Zips led all, but 37 seconds in the first half and took a 15-point lead, 45-30 into the break. Akron took its largest lead with 16:19 in the second half of 19 points, 55-36, before the Herd fell by the 12-point margin.
NOTES
Kinsey has scored in double-figures in all seven games this season, while West has now scored 10 or more points in six of the seven contests.
Bennett has had 10 or more points and at least five rebounds in the last three games.

Marshall goes back on the road to take on the Toledo Rockets on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Toledo.
