Beyers set career-highs in points and rebounds

Box Score

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall men's basketball (2-6) had a quartet of student-athletes in double-figure scoring in 82-72 loss in the Glass City to the Toledo Rockets on Sunday afternoon.

"We are back to where we were when I first got here," Marshall head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the loss. "I know we're young, but you can't keep using that as a reason."

Junior Jarrod West led the way for the Herd 19 points. The guard added five assists and three steals to his stat line.

Junior Mikel Beyers followed West with 13 points making 5 of his seven shots. Beyers fell one rebound shy of a double-double with nine.

Junior Jannson Williams and sophomore Taevion Kinsey rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Herd with 12 each. Williams grabbed eight rebounds, while Kinsey dished out a game-high six assists.

Toledo's Luke Knapke led all scorers with 33, while Willie Jackson had a game-high 13 rebounds in the contest.

The Herd jumped out to the early lead with a 7-2 run in the first two-and-a-half minutes with five points from West and a jumper from Kinsey.

However, the Rockets answered with a pair of 7-0 runs and led 19-14 at the 9:33 mark in the opening half of play. Toledo led by as much as six the first half, but Marshall trailed by just four, 33-29, at the break despite being in serious foul trouble with Bennett playing just six minutes and Kinsey only seeing 10 minutes on the court with two and three fouls, respectively.

UT maintained its lead through the first part of the second stanza, extending its lead to 10 points, 51-41, with 11:37 left in the game. The Herd wasn't ready to give up. Three pointers by redshirt freshman Cam Brooks-Harris and Kinsey brought the deficit to just four, 57-53, with just over nine minutes left.

30 seconds later, a Kinsey three-point play, took a then six-point deficit to three, 59-56. Toledo regained the momentum with an 8-0 run and took the momentum as it nearly led by at least 10 points the rest of way.

NOTES
Kinsey has scored 10 or more points in all eight games, while West has reached 10 points in seven of the Herd's eight games.

Beyers' 13 points and nine rebounds are both career-highs.

The Rockets shot 33 free-throws to just nine attempts by the Herd.

Redshirt freshman Jeremy Dillon grabbed five rebounds in the game for the first time in his career.
