HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall men's basketball (3-6) is led by a stellar defensive effort in an 86-50 win over the Bluefield State Big Blues on Wednesday night at the Henderson Center.

"I'm trying to feel my way through pushing them and making sure they don't lose their confidence," Marshall head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the win. "We're a little fragile. I thought we started out well. I made two substitutions and then we started missing all of our threes. I played a lot of people. When you play 11, 12 people in a half, there are a lot of different lineups and it's hard to get into a rhythm."

Junior Jarrod West led a trio of Herd student-athletes with 10 or more points by pouring 18 points into the basket. The guard didn't just score in the win as he grabbed seven rebounds and had a game-high six steals.

Junior Mikel Beyers followed up West with 13 points. The forward also brought down seven boards and added a game-high four blocks to his stat line.

Freshman Goran Miladinovic rounded out the trio of double-figure with 10 points. He added a team-high eight rebounds and rejected three shots in the win.

Sophomore Taevion Kinsey dished out a game-high six assists and scored nine points in the win.

The first half was a sloppy one from both sides as the Herd led 34-24 at the break. Marshall shot 36.1 percent (13-36) from the field while holding BSC to a 28.6 field-goal percentage (10-35) in the first half.

The second half saw MU pour it on the Big Blues. The Herd benefitted from three runs of seven or more points including a 10-point run from the 7:34 mark to 5:50.

Marshall concluded the game by holding Bluefield State to no points in the final three minutes and held the Big Blues to just one make in its final 17 attempts from the field.

NOTES
Miladinovic had his first game in double-figure scoring of his career.

Beyers tied his career-high of 13 points, while setting a career-high with four blocks.

West's six steals set a career-high for the junior guards breaking his previous high of five, which he did five times with the last occurrence happening on Jan. 31, 2019 at home against UTEP. He also moved into fifth in career steals in program history with 165 passing Sam Henry's 161. It's also the first time since Nov. 26, 2017 that a Marshall men's basketball player has had six steals in a game when Jon Elmore did so against Concord.

Junior Darius George had four steals which tied his career-high set against Akron on Dec. 2, 2017.

Tonight was the 99th win of D'Antoni's career.

Marshall's 16 steals and 14 blocks are team-highs this season.
