Senior carries a 4.0 grade point average

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall men's soccer senior Jonas Westmeyer was named a CoSIDA (College of Sports Information Directors of America) First Team Academic All-American, the organization announced Thursday.

The CoSIDA Academic All-American teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance on the field in the classroom. Westmeyer along with senior Carlos Diaz-Salcedo were both named CoSIDA Academic All-District and became eligible for the All-American team.

Westmeyer is Marshall's first CoSIDA Academic All-American. He is one of 11 players out of the 34 honored across three teams to maintain a 4.0 grade point average.

"Jonas is so deserving of this award," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "He is an excellent example of a student-athlete. He's performed on the pitch at the highest level and finishes his career as a champion. Off the pitch, his diligence, work ethic and academic endeavor have made him a top student. He's a great role model for our younger lads. I'm so happy for him."

Westmeyer helped lead Marshall to the Conference USA Regular Season and Tournament Championships, as well as its first ever NCAA Tournament berth and win.

The senior leader earned the C-USA Academic Medal in 2018-19 at the end of his first year at Marshall after transferring from the University of Munster in Germany. Westmeyer looks to make it two-for-two with a 4.00 GPA as a business major going for his MBA. In his two full seasons with the Green & White, Westmeyer has appeared in 42 contests, started 31 and played over 2,900 minutes on the pitch. Westmeyer has seven career goals and 13 assists. The Beckum, Germany native assisted on two major goals with the game-winner against Charlotte in the C-USA Title game and the game-winner against WVU in the NCAA Tournament.

Westmeyer's last two goals were probably the biggest of his career as game-winners at Oakland and against No. 15 Kentucky. His winner at Oakland came in the 81st minute on a free kick that curled just inside the upper 90 in the left corner in front of the outstretched glove of the keeper. Westmeyer scored the lone goal in the 1-0 victory over 15th-ranked Kentucky at home on Senior Day in the 64th minute. He was named to the College Soccer News National Team on Nov. 4.

Westmeyer finished the 2019 season with four goals and was second on the team with nine assists.

Florida Atlantic's Hagay Jalon was named to the Third Team, and was also the first Owl in team history to be named to the Academic All-America team. Honored on the women's teams, Logan Bruffett for North Texas was selected to the second team.
