United Soccer Coaches Release

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer coaching staff was named the Southeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year by the United Soccer Coaches, the organization announced Friday.

Head coach Chris Grassie along with assistant coaches Petsa Ivanovic (third year) and Josh Faga (first year) and volunteer assistant Brian Grassie (first as volunteer assistant) were recognized after the Herd finished its best season in program history.

"One of the things I love most about my job is the people I get to work with every day," coach Grassie said. "Petsa, Josh, (Strength and Conditioning coach) Sam (Black), and my dad did a great job this year. Each one of them brought something different and something special to our team. They really are fantastic people to work with every day."

Coach Grassie, in his third season at the helm, and his staff led Marshall to the 2019 Conference USA Regular Season and Tournament Championship. The team earned its first rankings in the NCAA/United Soccer Coaches Top 25 since 2001, and culminated in its highest ranking of No. 11 and a first round bye in the program's first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Herd hosted a second round match, defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers and advanced to the Sweet 16.

Grassie was named the Conference USA Coach of the Year as one of 12 individuals to be honored in the postseason for Marshall. The Herd finished the year with an all-time best record of 16-3-3 after falling to the 6th-ranked Washington Huskies in the Sweet 16.

Marshall also saw a major spike in attendance numbers at its home matches as more and more fans came out to watch the exciting play on the pitch. It resulted in back-to-back, Hoops Family Field attendance records. First against No. 15 Kentucky on Senior Day, a crowd of 2,032 came out to watch Marshall come away with a 1-0 win. The second was the second round matchup with WVU in the NCAA Tournament as 2,126 packed into Hoops Family Field to witness the Herd defeat the Mountaineers, 2-1.
