HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall men's basketball (13-9, 6-3 C-USA) rides Jon Elmore's career-night to hold off the UTEP Miners (7-13, 2-7 C-USA), 91-86, at the Cam Henderson Center Thursday night.
"We're pretty tough to beat," fifth-year head coach Dan D'Antoni said. "We held them to 44 (percent from the field) and 27 (percent on three-pointers) which is pretty good."
Down by seven with 1:37 left in the first-half, Elmore led the Herd on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 37-37 as Marshall never trailed the rest of the way.
"We finally made some shots as a team, I finally made some shots too," Elmore said. "I wanted to cry at one point I was so happy to see the ball hit the bottom of the net. I haven't seen that a whole lot lately."
The senior guard scored a career-high 44 points, tied for the sixth most in a game in program history. Elmore made 14 of 23 attempts from the field, including 7 for 12 from beyond the arc, and 9 of 10 from the charity stripe. He also added a team-high seven rebounds.
The 44-point effort is tied for the fourth-most in a game in Conference USA history.
Elmore wasn't alone in career-highs, as Jannson Williams blocked a career-high eight shots as he scored 11 points and made 5 of 6 from the free-throw line. The junior forward also grabbed five boards in the victory.
C.J. Burks scored a quiet 18 points on a 50 percent shooting night, 8 of 16 from the field. The senior guard dished out a game-high five assists to go with four rebounds and a steal.
Jarrod West was a bulldog on the defensive end of the court as he had five takeaways for the fourth time in the last six games for the Herd. West added three assists and three points to his stat line.
Marshall made 11 of its 29 threes and held UTEP to just 6 of 22 from three-point range.
The Herd also took points off turnovers 17-11.
NOTES:
- Jon Elmore now has 2,332 points for his career. That mark ties him with John Taft for second-most in program history and he is seven points away from eclipsing UTEP's Randy Culpepper for second-most in Conference USA history.
- Elmore is the first player in program history to reach 300 made three-pointers in a career as he now has 302.
- With West's five steal game, he now has 110 takeaways for his career. The mark is tied for 21st most in program history with Calton King and Malik Hightower and is one away from cracking the top 20.
- Jannson Williams has blocked 75 shots in his career with the Herd. He moved past J.R. VanHoose for 14th all-time as VanHoose had 74.
- The 44 points by Elmore is the first game by a Marshall player with at least 40 points since DeAndre Kane dropped 40 against Tulsa on March 8, 2012.
- Elmore becomes just the seventh Herd player in program history score at least 44 points in a game joining Keith Veney, Bunny Gibson, George Stone, Ronald Blackshear, Walt Walowac and Skip Henderson. Henderson did so three times.
- Williams' eight blocks rank tied for eighth in program history.
