CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Marshall softball team lost a 2-1 decision to Appalachian State on Sunday at the Holy City Showdown.
The Thundering Herd is now 10-5.
"Tough game," Herd head coach Megan Smith said. "I thought Appalachian State played a tough game and made some really great defensive plays and we weren't able to push the ball through offensively. I thought (Abigail) Tolbert did a great job. But, I thought for us to hit the way we did yesterday and then come out today and not execute the way we wanted too was disappointing. We need to work on getting more consistent offensively.
"Overall for the weekend there were a lot of positives. We lost two games, both by one run, so we had chances to win both. We need to get back and work on every aspect of our game."
Marshall managed just two hits in the game. Senior Hannah Giammarino recorded the first when she ran out an infield single in the fifth. Freshman Chloe Lee reached on a leadoff single to left and then stole second in the sixth. On a fly out to left, the leftfielder for the Mountaineers threw back to second to try and double-up Lee, but the throw sailed over her teammate and went into right field. Lee came around to score to tie the game up at 1-1.
Appalachian State regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the win.
Senior Abigail Tolbert took the loss as she pitched a complete game, allowed just five hits, two runs and struck out a career-high eight batters.
Marshall returns to the field with its first home game of the 2019 season on Wednesday, Feb. 27, against the Ohio Bobcats. First pitch for the single game is set for 3 p.m. ET.
